From Adagio Teas

To most Westerners, it is a little known fact that the word ‘Chai’ simply means ‘tea’ in Hindi. Therefore, all teas are technically chais. However, instead of the ‘chai’ that most Americans are used to (which usually contains really bad tea), we offer a Masala Chai tea – premium Ceylon black tea with a unique blend of spices; cinnamon, cardamon, and ginger.

About Adagio Teas View company

Adagio Teas has become one of the most popular destinations for tea online. Its products are available online at www.adagio.com and in many gourmet and health food stores.

So, technically, I did not drink this per se.

I have two chais in my collection at this moment, and this one just doesn’t have the right ratios for my palate compared to the other one (Yogic Chai, in case you were wondering). But I can’t just waste tea, so this morning when I decided I wanted oatmeal I figured steeping a heaping tsp. of this in the water before adding the oats probably couldn’t hurt.

It’s actually really good this way – the oatmeal is nicely spiced and I didn’t have to add anything but some sugar and cream. I’m excited – this can be my cooking chai. Chai cupcakes, chai cookies…oh, the possibilities!

im having this i guess the real way chai is made and i gotta say…..i dont wana try it any other way lol
i stole this from teaplz
1 cup of water, 1 cup of milk/milk equivalent 1 tbsp of sugar, 1 tbsp of chai

Boil water and sugar together in a saucepan until sugar dissolves into water. Into a syrup.
Add the chai, then simmer for 5 minutes.
Add the milk, simmering and stirring.
When it comes to a boil (be careful that it doesn’t boil over!), turn the heat off and let it sit for a long time. Like 7-10 minutes long. I let it sit for around 8-9 or so.
Strain and serve.

it gos perfectly with my turkey dinner i just made :D its amazing!
bumping up my rating!!!

teaplz

OMG YAY! I’m SO happy it worked for you! What was your rating before? I stole this from takgoti, so… yay! Awesomeness. Does it taste very different from the really quick way of making it?

teaplz

And there are SO many ways to make chai, you can’t really make it “wrong,” but this is definitely more authentic and much more flavorful. I’m pretty sure this is something close to what Samovar does, knowing takgoti!

Kitch3ntools

i think it was a 70ish :) it had more complexity to the flavor that i didnt get with the fast and dirty way lol its so much more amazing and comforting and it feels like its inviting me in rather than being overbearing like it was b4. i have the chocolate chai i wanna try that way now. but no moo juice :( used the last of it to make the masala :D

teaplz

Awwww yay! Seriously SO happy for you! I feel like it actually tastes like its own beverage instead of tea-with-milk-in-it. I’m not a fan of putting milk in tea, but this just tastes like its own thing!

Kitch3ntools

now that i look at my b4 post about this tea i said i wish it were stronger. but i remember the clove scent attacking me as a drank this (not always a bad thing lol) but making it this new cool way it reminds me of christmas in a mug(my fav holiday lol)

Kitch3ntools

i agree, i usually really dont like milk in my tea (unless its my cinnamon) but this is something all on its own. it tastes like it is suppose to taste like that. :D

amandajo

mmm…that recipe is delicious! vowing never to go back to starbucks ever again!

All of my chai samples are gone. It’s a very sad day. This was an above average chai, but I much prefer Adagio’s Thai Chai. The coconut and lemongrass in the Thai Chai really make a difference. I made up enough chai last night for several cups and a travel mug for this morning. I’ve gone 100% traditional when it comes to making chai, so I can only make it at home…not the office. holds arms in the air al a Fiddler on the Roof TRADITION!!!! It was pretty sweet to be able to drink this at work. It’s all special and whatnot.

I’m waiting to see if Adagio does any kind of November special and then I’ll reorder a big bag of Thai Chai for the hizzouse.

Jillian

I’m amazed at how quickly the level in my canister of Thai Chai is decreasing. I think the boyfriend might be sneaking some when I’m not looking! XD

takgoti

If I was a rich girl…

Then…I’d buy a lot of tea. Damn it, now you have me thinking in musicals. I’m going to be humming Hey, Big Spender all day, aren’t I?

Auggy

A sad day, indeed.

Perhaps I will have chai tonight. Sort of like mourning your chai-less-ness with a moment of silence. But not.

Cofftea

They ARE doing a special. You get their savory sampler w/ a $19 purchase.

LENA

oh, I’m all over it! My order should be at my door by the time I get home from work!

Cofftea

Let me know what you think of the savory teas:)

Jillian

@ LENA, Damn you for having fast shipping service! ;p

LENA

@ Jillian – mwahahaha!

This chai reminds me strongly of how Starbuck’s chai used to taste before they got all cheap are started using that wussy, sugary syrup instead. It’s a big, bold chai with a nice, well-balanced mix of spices. I love the light ginger notes that are woven through it as many chais just go with the basic cardamom/cinnamon/cloves and leave it at that. I’m going to have to try this as a traditional-style latté next time.

chai teas can be quite bad if the spices are a bit off, my own chai was waay to clovey if you ask me.

Finals week for me—seeing as how I’m the type to plan ahead and freak out, I made a cup of tea, studied, and planned out the rest of my weeks after classes before I get back to school. I have so much stuff to do! I think I might have one serving of this left—I’m looking forward to reordering, and possibly trying the chai sampler that Adagio offers. (As soon as it’s back in stock, of course…) Maybe when the new store opens in Naperville, I’ll take the train over and buy tons of tea—if I have time.

Cofftea

At least get the green chai.

Cory Ostermann

I promise I will! :) I’m a bit of a chai-fiend, so I think I’m going to have to try them all.

Cofftea

WOOHOO!!! Yay for meeting a fellow chai fiend. Have you tried 52teas’ Mayan Chocolate Chai? It’s made me a complete chai snob… it’s the only back based chai I like. (Not the only one I’ll drink, but the only one I really like.)

Cory Ostermann

No, I haven’t tried 52 teas Mayan Chocolate Chai—but it sounds fabulous. I’m gonna add that to my shopping list! Also, I’m always willing to take suggestions as to what chais I should try—sounds like you have really refined tastes, and I just love chai TOO much. :)

Cofftea

No, I don’t have refined taste- it’s just WAY TOO FLIPPIN GOOD! TEAhehe;)

Cory Ostermann

ha ha, isn’t it the truth? Whoever invented chai, I wish I could have met him/her. I’d give them the biggest thank you hug!

I drink chai about once a month it seems but I’m always pleasantly surprised by the tasty treat! I’m still very sick with the friggin Swine Flu and thought I needed to put some spices in there to help get me over the hump of this damn flu. I’ve never felt so sick in my life! I am able to make teas all day long to try and get thru this mundane existence right now-thank God for tea! This chai is tasting very good, so for the moment I am happy, I’ll just savor the malty ,spicy, yumminess of all the wonderful herbs in this tea right now..its just about the only thing I can do to try to keep my mind of feeling like utter crap.

Well I just finished that warm delicious mug of chai but now the aftertaste for some reason is what makes me want to put it away for another month. Chai is not a tea that I can stomach a double infusion with. One 16 oz mug satiates me just enough.

Angrboda

I hope you beat it soon!

Cofftea

@Kat, that’s kinda funny… most black teas (although I’m slowly starting to outgrow it) make my stomach sick- except chai. I find it interesting how not only each person’s tastebuds, but stomach, react differently to different teas.

takgoti

Oh. Dude. I hope you’re better ASAP. Then you can get one of these:

Chai chai CHAI.
I was feeling chai/spice tonight.
It was between this or Watson or Moriartea or Watson’s Mustache buuuuuut ehh I just was just feeling chai tonight so might as well get straight up chai :)
Brewed a pot of chai BECAUSE I ACTUALLY HAVE A TEAPOT NOW WOW. I went to home goods and I’m not really picky with the pot, just as long as it’s affordable. Got a pot for $7 and it came with a strainer that I really don’t care about. Got that and went home, legit brewed a pot and now I’m enjoying my chai! Got a dash of milk and sugar and it is perfect :)

Making this quick because I need to leave for work in three minutes.

This chai is exactly what I expected to be, but unfortunately a little on the mild side. While it’s better than the DeKalb Farmer’s Market blend I have been drinking, it isn’t the best. Arbor Teas still has my heart when it comes to chai. Still, I’m going to enjoy it on this gross, cold day while I drive into the city.

This is a decent chai. A nice pepper taste from the ginger, not too spicy though. The black tea base is not so harsh in the midst of the spices, which works in Adagio’s favor here, because usually I am not too crazy for their black tea base.

I added some brown sugar to this cup, and I like the way the molasses works with the spices, it reminds me of spice cake! Not my favorite chai, but it’s good.
