Have we gone too far? Perhaps, but considering the culinary appeal of savory and sweet artichoke we thought it married particularly well with a nice green base tea. Complex and completely different, this tea will please a sophisticated palate looking for something unusual.

I haven’t had much Adagio Tea lately – only because my stash is filled with all sorts of companies at the moment…so…I am going to start randomly choosing (except for the 1 Oolong I have yet to try from Auggy!)
For this specific go-around with Adagio’s Artichoke Green I thought I would under infuse for a change – just to see if there was a difference…
The post-infusion liquid is still murky but the aroma is more like what I think an artichoke is to smell like. Buttery Artichokes…yup! Pretty much. Altho I like this tea basically anyway you infuse it…it does certainly taste different depending on steep times and amounts.

It has been a very busy couple of weeks and I have managed to get carpel tunnel in my right hand from typing… So I believe my tasting notes will be a bit shorter than usual for a while.
The dry tea smells vaguely fruity. It reminds me of a mild version of Adagio’s Guanabana tea. The leaves are bright green and inviting.
Once brewed it smells a bit like artichoke, but not enough. It is tasty, but not quite artichoke tasty. It has a pleasant sweet aftertaste, similar to the aftertaste of an artichoke. Still taste a bit of fruitiness.
I have to confess that I decided to add a dash of salt to see what happened. Turns out it was a bit more savory, but also reminded me a bit of drinking sea water…. So probably won’t be doing that again. I rather not feel like I am sipping watered down ocean…
Adagio gets points for coming up with this amazing idea. It still needs some work before it is perfect, but I enjoyed it plenty.
Enough typing for now. Time to rest my aching hand… Argh… Why did I work so hard!!! : (
I love the IDEA of artichoke too! I hated the big worms I had to pluck off my plants…they were inches long and were bright green with what looked like Red eyes and horns at both ends to scare off preditors and me! Krystaleyn knows what they are probably! (maybe she eat’s um!) I love, love artichokes though!
Tomato hornworms! Disgusting, nasty things. At least that’s what I think you’re talking about. I confess I’ve never actually seen an artichoke growing to my knowledge :)
The artichoke my MIL grows are full of earwigs. They love those crevices… Good thing I’m not a huge fan of artichokes.
Earwigs eeks maybe the hornworms ate um! No earwigs evah! Perfect soil …Monterey Coast not far away is sandy and lots of artichokes are grown in Castroville (Amy Oh knows) .But those worms get really long and you have to pluck um off ick!
Yeah, we were down there about 6 weeks ago but I’ve never gotten up close and personal with the bugs. ewww!
I’d rather worms than earwigs. Shudder. Maybe I should move out to where you are to plant my dream garden and forget about California.
No! I have no idea if you can grow artichokes in Colorado? There are tons of organic farms here though and one of the locations of the World Seed Banks is here in town. I love the NO GMO availability.
I think artichokes like the sandy soil and the ocean air…

I think Amy is right! Here we grow mean melons, cabbage and root veggies, corn, peaches, vines and we grow BEER!
I grew up in Nevada. We had them on the canals and drain ditches. Any where there was standing water or water that kept the soil pretty moist. No one really cultivated those. We were just careful when we harvested them.
Just finished watching District 9 and thought it was time to change up the tea I was drinking. I realized I haven’t had this in a while (and I’ve only had it once) so I pulled it out. It smells a lot more floral than I remember. Taste-wise, it’s odd. A little tart, a little floral. When I take a big sip, I get a raw, sharp green veggie taste (hello artichoke) and the aftertaste is slightly vinegar-y. The front taste of each sip is also odd. Almost a powdery floral taste. Very weird and this one bit of taste just doesn’t really go for me.
So yeah, dropping the score on this one just a little. It’s odd and go Adagio for attempting the weirdness because you never know until you try, right? This isn’t a great tea, but if I was in a weird mood, I think this would fit pretty well. Not a tea to drink when looking for a lot of subtlety because it isn’t a subtle tea and if you look too hard, you end up with powdery floral. But hey, want a green to smack you around just a little bit and give you something unexpected? This would do it!
At least the tea is better than the movie! I watched it the other night and thought it was one of the worst movies I have EVER seen! LOL
Huh, I just watched this movie the other night, too! I guess we were all waiting for it to come out on DVD!
I actually really enjoyed District 9. I’m not going to get into it too much, but I thought it was very well done on many fronts – especially considering their rather miniscule budget [comparatively speaking].
Anyhow, this tea still sounds really, really weird. How would you compare it to White Cucumber, Auggy?
I have to agree with Takgoti on D9. There were many things about it that worked out very well. That said, though, I found it a bit too violent for my taste and that overshadowed it for me. Kind of like Watchmen. Good story, but ruined for me by too much gore.
I saw this tea the other day and it seemed so intriguing! Good to know that it isn’t disgusting.
@takgoti – White Cumber is EEEEEVIL! This one is much better. Mucho mas better.
And I agree with takgoti and Angrbroda. I enjoyed the movie. I liked the under-story he was showing even if I thought the main story lacked a true connection to the characters. And I’ll admit, I thought the exploding people was kind of… disgustingly giggle-worthy.

I think the gamer in me has made me not mind gore so much. That, and being around boys and action movies has kind of…well, they’ve combined to make it not as big of a deal as it should be. I think that sometimes movies [especially when their core demographic is a group of people who might be semi-immune to violence in media] push the limits on graphicness to make a point. I’m going to stop here, because I see this becoming longer. And not gonna lie, I teared up in D9.
Also, part of me wants to try the artichoke. I think I’m just gonna have to cave and order a little sampler pack from Adagio. Maybe when I run out of Keemun Rhapsody [LENA F. is awesome].
I would have thought that my job had conditioned me to not be squeamish. I work in a hospital pathology lab and I can handle various insides and blood and guts and what have you there with no problem. Someone’s lung with with a tumor the size of my fist? Not a problem. An amputated finger that keeps pointing at you no matter which way you turn the container? Piece of cake. But on tv, even knowing that it’s fake and what I’m used to seeing is very very real, I don’t do so well. It’s weird, really.
As for this whole savoury line, Adagio released, I’ll have to say the white cucumber that Ricky sent to me pretty much murdered any curiosity I ever had for the others. I’ll probably still give them a go if I ever get the chance, but I can totally live with missing out.
@Angrboda That’s so funny. I have trouble dealing with the real stuff unless I talk myself down and really detach myself before I see it. So can you not watch doctor shows and stuff like that either?
Also, yeah…white cucumber is quite…singular.
District 9 was alright…I gave it 3 out of 5 Netflix stars. I don’t think I’ve tried this tea yet. I’m just not in the mood for the overly strange.

Takgoti, doctor shows and such are fine, (except for when they get stuff wrong. You do NOT spin a bloodsample in which you want to count the cell types, for example. Or when they order tests done that cannot be done in less than 24 hours). It’s more violence-gore than just insides-gore.
@Angrboda That’s hilarious [in an observational way, not a haha laughing at you way]. I have a friend in med school who gets really angry when she watches Grey’s Anatomy. Like, really angry. Interesting about the gore differences. Insides-gore tends to make me more queasy than than violence gore. Not that I really have any real-life experience with either.
Takgoti, I haven’t watched Grey’s much. I got tired of it pretty quickly. I watched House for a while and didn’t spot any enormous mistakes there apart from the tests-that-takes-24-hours-w/-results-in-20-minutes thing. And the fact that he has the DOCTORS do the lab work, apparently. I’m sure they’re supposed to have more than the one patient to worry about, so could they kindly stop taking my job, plz? I dunno, maybe a doctor’s job is different in America, but over here most doctors rarely, if ever, get anywhere near the lab.
Hahaha, yeah, well testing results always get a time cut for…time purposes. I know people who get annoyed with that in a lot of procedurals too, but I guess it’s just one of those things everyone has to suspend their belief for to make the show more enjoyable. And yeah, doctors here don’t do lab work here eitehr, but the idea on House [and I think in at least one episode they’ve touched on that specifically] is that his team is completely autonomous from the rest of the hospital and he doesn’t trust the lab techs because he thinks they’re idiots. Part of his conditions upon working there was that they only take on patient at a time. Anyhow, I heart Hugh Laurie very much and I don’t know anything about medicine, so it’s an easy pill for me to swallow regardless of accuracy!
Don’t get me wrong…I love sci fi stuff…I guess I just thought it was overly cheesy…I was really expecting more and thought the acting was really bad. The story had potential…but was left wanting…lol…
One thing that is “nice” (I’m trying to look on the bright side, here) about one’s taste buds operating at limited ability is that it gives one ample opportunity to clear out the tea shelf to make room for new teas.
So that’s what I’ve been doing… drinking teas that I’ve tasted previously and written reviews for on the Tea Review Blog (even if they haven’t yet published). I am making good use of the tea (It is rather comforting even though I’m not as effective at tasting it) and I am not “wasting” teas I’ve not yet tasted and reviewed on my miserable lack of tasting ability.
This tea is actually quite tasty, even with my funky taste buds! I think it tastes more like artichokes now than when I tried it originally. There is a faint lemon-like essence as well as a nice buttery flavor, which is quite appropriate to me, because the sauce I generally serve with artichoke is usually either a lemon-y butter-garlic sauce or a vinegar-y butter-garlic sauce. (Both are yummy, it really usually just depends upon whether or not I have lemons readily available… but I digress!)
It is a very unusual flavored tea, but, I really do like it. Of the teas from Adagio that I’ve tried, this is definitely one of my favorites, if not the favorite.

I didn’t do this one iced. I used two tea spoons of tea for 16 ounces of hot water (good amount of steam, rapid bubbles at the base of the kettle = oh, about 170 degrees to me)
I love how changing the parameters can make 2 completely different teas. Their steeping parameters make a rather fruity cup while using a ratio of 1.5TB leaves, 6oz water @ 160 degrees, steeped for 90 sec makes for a MUCH more savory cuppa.
My second infusion of the leaves proved to be even tastier than the first infusion…
I prefer the more savory of the 2 cuppas.
I got the savory teas sample collection with my Adagio order and tonight I decided to try the most intimidating-sounding one first. I’ve never really eaten much artichoke and it’s always been mixed in with other ingredients – such as in a calzone or an omelett – so I don’t really have a definitive taste pinned down in my mind except that it always tasted rather pickled and salty.
The smell of the dry leaves and the brewing tea is surprisingly fruity – in fact it almost smells like peach or mango to me. The dry leaves are of a nice size and a bright, fresh-looking green shade and they brew up to make a clear, pale-green coloured tea.
The taste is almost as fruity as the scent and it’s sweet, though in a rather subdued manner. It’s only on the aftertaste that I get a faint hint of what I’m used to thinking of as artichoke – savory and pickled.
Wow! I thought this was going to be scary, but it was quite good. Like the Sesame tea, this came from Adagio’s Savory Sampler, which I received in the mail yesterday. I actually drank this last night. I was very apprehensive, but when I smelled the tea I began to feel less so. The tea actually smells kind of sweet (my husband said fruity, but i don’t know about that) but still like artichokes. In my mind, artichoke flavor = tangy / salty. That is not what this tea tastes like at all. This is more “essence of artichoke”. Now, I did not use enough leaf when I brewed this last night, so I will have to re-try with a more correct proportion. But the flavor itself is very smooth, savory, soothing. Definitely worth trying. I will have to try a few more times before I can adequately rate it, but it surely falls into the “thumbs up” category.
So looking forward to trying these. Mine will get here Wednesday. Whee!

Nooo! I so wanted to be the first one to post about this, but my tea isn’t here yet :-p I’m glad to hear that it’s a good tea…my personal reaction when I read about it was “Man, that’s gonna be some funky-tastin’ TEA!”
I’m relieved to hear that too, especially since out of the sampler set this was the tea I was the most afraid of.
I’m jealous that you’ve got your order already though, I ordered on the first day and I still have maybe a week or more left to wait. Damn you Canadian Customs! XD
I ordered mine on the 11th so it’ll be here anytime between today and next Fri. I’m betting on closer to Fri though since WI is pretty far from NJ.:( I have an 8oz tin of cucumber already so I just orded the other 3 and gave the full sampler to a friend for Christmas along w/ the things that made up the $19 purchase.
I have my order all set up, but I’m being so finicky about the other teas I want. Hopefully I’ll get these by the end of the week.

My first reaction to smelling this tea was, “oh man, I was looking forward to this, what a disappointment.” I literally gagged a little on the overwhelming fruitiness. Its not even like a sweet fruity, more like semi-fermented fruity. I’m having issues linking this unnatural scent to any sort of edible plant, never mind my beloved artichoke. Eh, I think to myself, I’ve had tea that smell like woodsmoke and taste like carmel and creme, might as well brew it up.
Thank Crickt I did! This is absolute amazing in a cup! The taste of the green tea and whatever they did to make it artichoke flavor meld perfectly into one glorious note. This is the artichoke flavor that permeates the breadcrumbs in stuffed artichokes that makes it not stuffing. But distilled and added to a mellow grassy base that only enhances the taste. Also so natural sweetness from the green really gives it a nice solid finish. My favorite part has to be that first tangy high note that settles down into the whole artichoke taste.
Very, very good. I’m usually not a fan of greens or flavored teas, but I hope this sticks around for a long time so I can re-order it. Not a perfect 100, because I have a hard time declaring things perfect being the good skeptical scientist that I am. But this is damn close.
I’m SO glad I’m not the only one that thinks it’s fruity! I’ve found the artichoke comes out more w/ each additional infusion. I’m making #5 right now.

You guys are making me crave this tea. I adore artichokes; they’re my favorite vegetable! I really can’t wait to get my hands on a sample of this and the sesame. I’m not too thrilled about cucumber though. Not a fan!

Teaplz, really??? The cucumber is my favorite. I have a huge tin so I didn’t buy it w/ the other 3 tins. Try it iced.
Since steeping ginseng green w/ Premium Sencha perameters went so well, I decided to try it w/ this. 1/2TB leaves, 2oz water @ 160 degrees, steeped for 90 sec. I like these perameters for steeping because it makes a green tea shot or green tea espresso type drink. Lots of flavor, caffeine, L-theanine, and tannins in very little water.
I just need to smell this to know this serving is different. While there is still a bit of sweetness on the nose, it smells much more savory than my past attempts. The flavor is very much like the the nose- very compact. Strong, but not bitter. Mainly savory, but w/ a hint of sweetness.
I’m not as well versed in green teas, but I do like this one. There’s a bright sweetness in this brewed, but it’s not sugary sweet. Almost like a slightly sweeter meyer lemon mixed with the grassiness of a decent green tea. I’m not sure I could pick out the “artichoke” flavor if I was doing a blind taste-test, but it is a very enjoyable cup! Thanks Awkward Soul for the generous sample!

I sent Adagio an email yesterday asking if they plan to increase the number of teas in the European webshop (they got just the basic few now) – and today they answered that they are planning to offer 90% of their teas that are sold in the States. Very soon ;D So yay for Adagio…

Yep it is :D I love them. Shopping and communication is very smooth and teas are very good (judging by silver needle i’m waiting for 3 new ones these days).
I like Adagio ok. I have been less impressed with their black teas than I have with their greens (like this one, the Artichoke green, is quite good). But they do have some really unique flavors and I have enjoyed some of the blends.
I’m a chai LOVER and even their chocolate chai is “meh” in my book… their green chai is really good though. I’m not a huge flavored blacks (and even less of unflavored blacks), but the ones I’ve tried (mostly dessert flavors) have been pretty good for the price.
