I love the buttery Chinese sencha we use to create most of our flavored green teas with, but occasionally I like to try starting with different base teas. This week, we’ve blended Chun Mee green tea with organic green cardamom pods, lemon peel, lemon myrtle, lemongrass, lemon balm and lemon verbena for a delicious lemony citrus treat with a nice cardamom kick. Mmmmm. This is another one that got away from me. I had actually forgotten about it so I’m happy to see it in my Christmas box.
It’s like sun and could mist tea’s older more sophisticated sister. While the fluffy kitty tea is lemony sweet and adorable like the picture on the pouch this is a more refined and savory tea. Perfect balance of lemon and cardamom. I was actually not familiar with Chun Mee but I might have to check some unflavored out because it serves as an excellent base here.
Held up to two good steepings, first at two minutes and the second at three. I think it might be good to use the leaves from the second steeping for cold brewing and might try than next time. It worked well for fluffy kitty tea.
1 tbsp for 375 ml
Smokey hints. Light lemon flavour. Green tea flavour is oceanic-mineral. The cardamom flavour is not overly apparent. There may have been some flavour lost due to age.
I will not give this an official rating because I don’t really like lemon-green tea and because I’ve had this one around for so long. I received this in my 52teas 12 days of tea box last year.

I won’t lie, I wasn’t thrilled about tasting this tea, especially after I wasn’t a huge fan of Sun and Cloud Mist (which I’m determined to give another try because, kitten label!). I didn’t hate this though. It was surprisingly sweet (I’m not used to being able to taste the sweetness in teas without adding sugar. I hope this means my palette is maturing!) so I drank it bare.
Once again, not a huge lemon fan, so I was a little disappointed when I opened this tea. But I was pleasantly surprised with the taste. The lemon was not overwhelming by any means. Instead, it’s much more subtle than I expected it to be, and paired well with the chun mee green tea. The tea has a pretty citrus-y flavor that isn’t overwhelmingly lemon.
On the ninth day of Christmas, 52Teas gave to me…Lemon Cardamom Chun Mee!
On first sniff, this doesn’t seem all that different from Sun and Cloud Mist. It has the same creamy lemon scent, and they’re both green teas albeit with different varieties for their bases. I’ve sniffed the two side by side, and this one is a little stronger/sharper smelling. I can also see whole cardamom pods in the dry mix, so I’m hopeful that this could be an interesting experience. The cardamom certainly intrigues me!
First impressions can be deceiving. The liquor is darker than I expected. I’ve never come across Chun Mee before, though, so I really had no idea what I was going to get. I’ll have to find out some more about it, since it’s certainly one I could come to like. Any non-bitter green I can get my hands on is fine by me.
The initial taste is, as I suspected, very similar to Sun and Cloud Mist. It’s slightly less sweet, but the same flavours are there. What’s different is that the cardamom comes through quite strongly in the aftertaste, which I like a lot. The middle of the sip is a bit flat, though, with almost no taste. I found that a bit odd. I think I might need to brew this one a touch longer than 2 minutes to try and counteract this, but it’s one of the reasons I want to research Chun Mee a little more. If I understood its characteristics, I’d feel better able to brew is properly.
Ultimately, this is a potentially nice lemon and cardamom flavoured green tea. I could happily drink it any time of the day. If I can counteract the flatness in the middle, it’ll be another easy winner with me.
This was my very first tea order, and my very first foray into the world of teaphilia. I ordered it because a friend on another website waxed ecstatic about it, and I like lemon and love cardamom, so of course I had to try it. I ordered 2 bags from Zoomdweebies.
The dry leaves smell heavenly, lemony and a bunch of other things I can’t place.
The first time I made it (several weeks ago), I knew nothing, and poured boiling water over it and steeped it for 5-6 minutes. Silly me. (Why doesn’t Frank include steeping instructions for complete newbies like me?)
I wanted to keep trying, because I really wanted to have the good experience that my ecstatic friend had with this tea.
In the meantime . . . I’ve expanded my experience with teas a tiny bit, and also bought a tea thermometer. Then today, I read here all about how others are making this tea, and, intending to use 180F water, I immediately forgot what I’d read and used 190F. Sigh.
I tried again, this time carefully waiting until the water reached exactly 180F, and timed the steeping to 2 minutes, 15 seconds. Then I tried a second steep with the same leaves, at 180F and 3 minutes, and got a similar cup. (I wish there were points for persistence.)
The steeped tea is very nice. In contrast to what others are tasting, I can’t really pick out the cardamom, but then, there are so many things going on in this tea, and so many ingredients that I’m not really familiar with (including the chun mee base), that it all comes across to me as a complex, interesting, lemony, grassy, a titch piney flavour. (The pineyness reminded me of Retsina, the Greek wine.)
I think this tea will grow on me as I keep drinking it.
I’m not fond of the astringency, and so maybe will try it next time at under 2 minutes, and/or at 170-175F. Anybody know if there’s a way to offset astringency? I did add about ¼ tsp sugar per cup.

Healthmonth. I can’t remember who it was. She mentioned in passing that she made a mug of this most fabulous, delicious Lemon Cardamom tea, and so I asked her what it was and where she got it. And the rest is history….
Another on-line friend has since sent me two shoeboxes full of various samples to taste, I’ve stopped pouring boiling water over anything and everything, I’ve (almost) stopped saying that I don’t like black tea, and I’ve even bought a tea thermometer.
A new world has opened to me. :-)
I got a small pack of this in last year’s (or maybe it was the year before?) 12 Days of Xmas pack. Either way, it has held up well. I’m finding that my favorite 52teas are the greens and oolongs. This tea is no exception to that rule. I love cardamom and it pairs really well with the lemon to make this tea bright without over doing the cardamom. The tea base is very nice, mellow and smooth. I get the buttery quality mentioned in the description. it leaves my tongue a little dry after each sip, but it isn’t a whole mouth dryness. I don’t think can see this tea as a permanent addition to my cupboard at the moment, but I could see buying a full bag of it and having it around for a while.
I liked this one a lot too.
