I’ve drank this before and didn’t really like it. Tried again this morning being more careful with steeping parameters. I used cooler water – closer to 90C for 3.5 minutes.MUCH better this time around. It’s still not all that I had hoped it would be, but a decent chocolate tea. I’m getting the black tea base and the chocolate, still not much almonds though. I’m not sure if it’s me, but I keep trying nutty teas, and keep not tasting much nuts. I would love to find a tea that I think actually tastes like almonds. All in all, this is just ok.
For a black tea blend this is very tasty. Black tea is not my tea of choice mostly due to the caffeine content but this is worth the indulgence. In line with the name, the predominate flavor is a nice roasted almond flavor with the chocolate and coconut in the background. I did find lowering the steep time for a typical black tea did allow for a greater balance of flavors even when enjoyed straight. Overall, this makes a nice dessert tea without being overly artificial or sweet.
I’m going through my back stash of 52teas teas that I haven’t tried yet and this one came up this morning. It smells very dark chocolatey and very nutty although I’m hoping that it doesn’t have any actual almond oil in it because that is what has ruined the taste of all almond teas for me previously. I just can’t stand the taste of that, it tastes like alcohol to me and I hate that taste.
This has a strong flavour of dark chocolate and nutty almonds. I’m picking up a bit of coconut, but mostly in the aftertaste. It’s been a while since I had one, but if the balance of the chocolate and the coconut were a little more balanced, this would taste strikingly like an Almond Joy bar. Hmm, that makes me wonder if there’s any chance of getting a 3 Muskateers tea.
It’s supposed to be summer here but it’s cool and cloudy. Not at all like the NY summers of yore. Yet I decided to cold brew this. It’s nice to have something cold and refreshing on a humid day, even if it is also cool and cloudy. Summer, where are you?
Anyway, if I had been asked to identify the flavors for this tea, I would have come up blank. The best I can say is that it’s kinda desserty. I don’t taste anything specific. Maybe it’s the age of the tea, but it’s been sealed up until a week ago… I dunno. Husband said he liked it even though he initially says it smelled like socks, so I guess we can drink this, but I’m sorta disappointed.
I don’t know if my tastes have changed, but I feel like 52teas has been going downhill for the last 2 years. Their teas just don’t pack the same flavor punch that they used to. :( I still hold out hope though that they’ll return to their former glory.
I think Frank occasionally gets amazing ideas and executes on them flawlessly, but when you have to produce so often, you’re bound to also make a few duds. Maybe it’s just been a streak of less than stellar teas, sadly. Some teas of his are still amazing. Marshmallow Treat Genmaicha, Sun and Cloud Mist, and Neapolitan Honeybush come to mind as awesome teas that are still awesome.
Yeah, those are some of the best. I guess I just don’t see how he can mess up chocolate, coconut, and almonds. I’ve ordered a pomegranate tea that had no pomegranate flavor whatsoever. Not even a generic fruity flavor. It honestly just tasted unflavored. And another fairly recent blend was chocolate and caramel and it tasted flavorless too. So it’s not like he tried a combination that was a bust. It’s just the overall flavorings have become less potent to the point of being undetectable.

From the LiberTEAS sampler I bought a while back
This tea smells amazing – almost like a well-crafted amaretto or a quality fortified wine – and I was literally salivating as I poured it out. I haven’t been this excited about a tea in a while…
Sadly, though, the taste doesn’t quite hold up. I was hoping for something deeply almond-flavoured, but instead it tastes a lot more like an Almond Joy – which, apparently, was their intent – with an oily sort of almond flavour and hints of dark chocolate and coconut.
All of these delicious flavours are at the end, though, with a whole mouthful of black tea that you have to get through first…and I kinda wish it was the other way around. It leaves my mouth feeling a little greasy, though, and that really starts to get unpleasant after a while.
So it’s not a favourite of mine, but I think it has promise. I may have to work on blending this one and seeing where it goes…
