From 52teas

This is my dream boba drink brought to life in my teacup. I wanted something softly toasted, with hints of marshmallow & brown sugar. So good!

Tea of the Week for April 22, 2024!

The idea for this tea came to me one day after visiting our local boba tea shop. I love boba tea – but one thing that I wish our local shops served was Houjicha blends. I want some roasty-toasty flavor with my boba – but the closest thing I could find to a roasty-toasty tea was their Oolong selection & sadly, I can’t bring myself to order their Oolong again. I don’t know – maybe I’m a tea snob – but their Oolong … it’s just not good. Not at all. Drinking their Oolong only once gave me a newfound appreciation for the Oolong teas I’ve blended in the past.

Anyway, I digress.

What I wanted from my local boba shop is something roasty-toasty – like a Houjicha – but I also wanted something marshmallow-y – so this is my dream boba drink. A base of white tea & houjicha with marshmallow flavor and brown sugar boba. And this tea tastes just like the tea I’d imagine. All that’s missing is that chewy, bouncy texture from the brown sugar boba bubbles. (I have also used this tea with homemade brown sugar boba bubbles, and it’s very yummy!)

This tasty tea is also vegan, gluten-free, allergen-friendly & all natural!

ingredients: white tea

organic ingredients: roasted green tea, marshmallow root, cotton candy crystals (made from cane sugar & flavoring) & natural flavors

to brew: shake the pouch well. Use 3g of tea to 12oz of freshly filtered water heated to 170°F & steep for 3 minutes. Strain & allow to cool for about 5 minutes. Enjoy!

serving suggestion: as I suggested above, this is amazing when served as a boba drink (cold brew the tea – strong! – add ice & homemade brown sugar boba bubbles. YUM!) It’s amazing cold-brewed & it’s also quite good as a hot drink. It’s sweet without adding additional sweetener due to the cotton candy crystals, however, don’t let anybody shame you if you want it a little sweeter – it’s great with honey!

Ugh, I had too much leaf for one mug and not enough for two, so I made a giant mug instead and this ended up being an unexpected sipdown. On the up side, I did get two steeps out of it. I’m a huge fan of 52teas’ marshmallow flavor. It doesn’t disappoint here, either. The combo of creamy marshmallow + sweetness + roasty hojicha makes this a really cozy fall blend. I fell asleep drinking my second mug and it tasted great as an iced tea in the morning, too.

Very smooth and creamy white tea, tasting more marshmallow creaminess than anything until it starts to cool and then the hojicha really comes out more. I am a hojicha fan, so that is a good thing! Between the huge pot made for breakfast with a friend and a pot for Ashley for breakfast, this is already a sipdown! (I just had the taster pack.)
