The 8th Tea of Christmas!

My original plan for the Oolong tea of our Holiday Package was to reblend the Winter Treat tea – which is a charcoal baked Oolong with banana and notes of marshmallow, cinnamon, buttered rum & cream. It’s absolutely delicious & I was super excited to be reblending it – unfortunately, when it came time to go shopping for the teas that I’d need to start blending – none of my tea vendors had any charcoal baked Oolongs available. Since the base is a pretty important part of this blend, I didn’t want to swap a different type of Oolong for the charcoal baked TieGuanYin.

Instead, I managed to find a fresh, beautiful green TieGuanYin & I created a tea around this Oolong. Since the Winter Treat tea is a banana tea, I wanted this blend to also include bananas – so, I thought – how about a Banana Eggnog blend? I was praising myself at this unique idea until I googled it & learned that it’s not so unique. It’s a thing. Maybe not a thing I had heard of until now, but it’s still a thing.

So, it’s unique to me!

This is a creamy, delicious Oolong blended with freeze-dried bananas, eggnog essence (It’s vegan!) & rum essence (It’s alcohol-free!) & some freshly shaved nutmeg. It’s so good! You get the sweet banana, a note of creamy, custard-y eggnog, a hint of rum & a kiss of nutmeg in every sip. This turned out to be every bit as good as I imagined it to be, even if I’m not the first one to imagine it.

organic ingredients: oolong tea, bananas, nutmeg, calendula petals & natural flavors

to brew: shake the pouch before you measure it, so you can be sure to get a little bit of nutmeg in your measurement. Those freshly shaved flakes of nutmeg are extremely fragile & will have most likely dissolved into dust by the time you open your pouch, but that doesn’t mean that those tiny fragments shouldn’t be part of your measurement!

Use 3g of tea to 12oz of very hot water (180°F) & steep for 3 ½ minutes. Strain & allow to cool for about 5 minutes. Enjoy!

Or – if you have a gaiwan & aren’t afraid to use it – I measured 4g of tea into the bowl of my gaiwan (my gaiwan is a slightly larger than usual gaiwan, so feel free to alter the measurement to 2 – 3g, depending upon the size of your gaiwan bowl). Fill the bowl with heated water (180°F). I steeped the first infusion for 30 seconds, the second infusion for 45 seconds & the third infusion for 1 minute – combining all 3 infusions into one teacup. LOVELY!

serving suggestion: Generally, this time of year, I focus primarily on drinking tea hot, but I would imagine this blend tastes amazing as an iced tea. Since I consumed my testing samples as a hot beverage, it is outstanding as a hot tea. I didn’t add any additions & it tasted amazing. After trying it without addition, I did try adding just a teensy bit of sugar (about ¼ teaspoon) to the 12 oz cup & I found that the sugar brought the flavors into focus just a little more, but there wasn’t a significant difference to my palate so I think I rather prefer this one without sweetener.

Sipdown!

Well, I really hope that I’d already recorded this sipdown and that I still have some left… but I just found out that it was reblended for this year’s 12 teas of Christmas, so at least I’ll have more on the way!

Such a fantastic tea – the absolute closest there has been to my favourite Banana Oolong from DavidsTea and bonus – no artificial sweetener! The perfect creamy oolong base blended with ripe banana.

Nice authentic banana flavor and buttery oolong. This tasted good both with and without soy milk. This was really high quality, though I’m not sure I tasted eggnog specifically. I’d happily drink it again though! 52teas banana is always awesome.

52teas 12 Teas of Christmas – Day 8

Only 3g left and brewed in a glass gaiwan.

Back in December, I got more of the lightly creamy eggnog vibe and stronger nutmeg taste. Now it’s all banana candy and I’m here to say I love that smell/taste after years of hate. It is not at all cloying and works really well with the mineral and floral oolong base. There’s also a soft streak of bittersweetness after finishing the cup that sits so satisyingly in my mouth. Aroma is like banana candy and rum.

Oh yeah — goes great with cinnamon bread!

Day 7 of the 52teas advent calendar. So happy to see this one again! I liked it so much last year that I ordered extra afterwards. The banana and the creaminess just go so well together. I only did two steeps this time just because I had a lot of other tea to get through, but I remember this holding up pretty well to a third steep in the past.

The 7th Tea of Christmas

I was a little surprised when this Oolong won out over the other Oolong teas in this year’s poll (as well as the biggest vote getter among the banana blends) – I was surprised mostly because I only just crafted it last year for last year’s box & I didn’t expect it to be that popular this soon! So, I’m surprised, but it is a happy & proud surprise!

I love this Oolong. I know it’s no big secret about my love for Banana teas. In fact, my love for banana teas is so grand that I have to limit myself to allowing only one banana tea in the 12 Teas of Christmas box because one year, I believe I allowed at least 2 (maybe 3?) banana teas & I heard about it from one or two customers who wanted a bit more variety. Me, though, I love me some banana tea & I could possibly create an entire 12 BANANA teas of Christmas & not get bored with banana teas! LoL

This tea is lovely though. I’m getting a strong banana & nutmeg note, with a lovely creamy eggnog background. I suspect one of the reasons the eggnog is a bit in the background is because I started my day with a chai that was “latte-d” with an amazing eggnog. I don’t make homemade eggnog, however, I do search the store for the best eggnog possible without those weird ingredients that I would prefer not to figure out how to spell and/or pronounce. I don’t indulge in a lot of eggnog this time of year, usually only one bottle per year – that’s my own little special Christmas reward I grant myself this time of year.

But I digress . . .

The point I was trying to relay there is that I don’t drink a lot of eggnog, but today, I started my day with a luscious, creamy eggnog chai latte & so my tastebuds might be a little “indulged” with that eggnog so maybe I’m not picking up on as much of the eggnog notes here. But I do taste the eggnog a bit – as well as a hint of rum. Nice. But what’s especially nice is the lovely banana & nutmeg notes – as well as that smooth note of TieGuanYin. LOVE!

Edited to add: THANK YOU to everyone who voted for this one!

Kaylee

I would totally buy 12 banana teas of Christmas! I love the banana flavor that you use.

52Teas

@Kaylee – noted! Maybe one day, I might do something like that. Maybe not around Christmas time, just because other things are so busy, but maybe sometime in spring, I don’t know if I’ll be caught up enough to do it this spring, but maybe next spring? It would definitely be a fun creation!

52teas 12 Teas of Christmas 2023 – Day 8

Yes!!! This is a flavoured tea that feels tailor-made for me! It’s a unique twist on one of my favourites 52teas creations: Banana Oolong (which is green… so pleasantly green). I was admittedly a little worried when I could only smell banana when I sniffed that dry leaf, but once it’s steeped up it’s pure alchemy. Banana but also Eggnog. Eggnog but also Banana. If there is any spice it’s swallowed by the incomprehensible depth that is Banana-Eggnog Infinity Loop – at least in this initial tasting.

Second Steep was more banana-y but still deliciously creamy, silky, buttery, floral, and smooth indulgence.

12 Teas of Christmas: Day 8

I remember being surprised that I could tolerate a banana tea from 52Teas a few years ago, because banana is not my thing. This year, though, I found myself actively enjoying it?! Growth!

Yeah, so I mostly get mild banana candy atop a mineral-y oolong. I’m weirdly not picking up any eggnog notes!

Adventageddon Day 20 – Tea 3/4

I was wondering exactly when the banana blend from 52Teas would show up; there are just a few flavours that are so iconic that I always know they’ll make an appearance in the countdown and this is one of them. What a fun twist, as well!

I worried I may have oversteeped this cup because I started brewing it and then got very distracted setting up a tasting at work – but it tasted fantastic. No signs of bitterness or astringency at all. Just smooth, silky banana and cream. Though I’m not 100% sure I get eggnog specifically instead of a more pudding-like bananas and cream flavour, this was one heck of a delicious cuppa! Maybe more nutmeg/cinnamon notes in addition to the custardy creaminess would help it feel a little more specific to the name?

Yeah, I’ve got to do a banana tea every year. Maybe a bit more nutmeg? I don’t know. When I tasted it, it tasted very eggnog-y to me.

52teas 12 Teas of Christmas 2023 – Day 8

Ooh, this sounds right up my alley!

It’s good, but I mostly get banana and oolong, not so much the eggnog part. It’s a bit of a banana taffy type flavor, and the oolong is clean and mineral without a lot of floral presence. Searching for some nutmeg or cream but sadly not finding it.

Still a nice tea though, just not very eggnog to me.
