From 52teas

Tea of the Week for May 9, 2022!

Yum!

This organic blend starts with our go-to green tea blend of chun mee & gunpowder teas. To this blend, I added lemon-y herbs (lemon grass, lemon verbena & lemon thyme), plus some dried lemon wedges & freeze-dried cranberries. The result is a bright, refreshing tea that will make your taste-buds dance!

It’s vegan, organic, gluten-free, allergen-friendly & all-natural!

organic ingredients: green teas, lemon grass, lemon verbena, lemon thyme, cranberries, lemons & natural flavors

more about this tea: Since I started doing this 52Teas thing, I have been reserving cranberry teas for the holidays. Understandable, I suppose, since cranberries are very much tied to fall & winter – but we drink cranberry juice year round – so why not drink cranberry teas year round too?

Last year, I reblended our Crisp Cranberry Soda Green Rooibos in April & I loved having this tisane in time for summertime iced tea brewing. So, I decided I needed to start including more cranberry teas throughout the year & not just the holidays!

to brew: give the pouch a gentle yet thorough shake before you measure out the tea – the herbs of this blend will shift to the bottom of the pouch & these do contribute to the lemon-y notes of the cup, so I strongly recommend you give it a shake to make sure those ingredients are well incorporated.

Use 3g of leaf to 12oz of hot water, allow to steep for 2 minutes. Strain & enjoy!

the first time I taste tested this tea (hot tea taste test), I unintentionally steeped it for 3 minutes (rather than the customary 2 minutes). The flavor was good, but it was a bit more astringent & even a tad bitter – which kind of works with the whole cranberry lemonade flavor profile, but I found myself enjoying the 2 minute steep more. The flavor is a little lighter, but the overall taste is considerably smoother – hints of a light pucker from the tart of the cranberry & lemon, but without the bitterness & astringency of the 3 minute steep.

that is to say that I enjoyed both steeps, but enjoyed the 2 minute steep more.

serving suggestion: I like this tea hot, but it truly shines as a cold-brewed (overnight!) iced tea. I like this without any additions but a wee bit of sugar (about ½ a teaspoon) will offer a little more of a traditional “sweet-tart” taste of lemonade.

It’s a trend of greens and I not getting along, although I think maybe this one was tastier? As in, more flavour and base tea, less boring old sencha flavour (which is what greens seem to get when oversteeped, steeped with too hot water, etc. etc.)

The cranberry flavor here was lovely, as it always is with 52teas. It definitely reminds me of the crisp cranberry soda flavor, which is a very good thing! This tastes really fresh and lovely cold. It has just the right amount of tartness to hint toward lemonade, but I usually find lemonade too sour, so this is perfect.

Sipdown! (44 | 141)

I enjoyed this one. It has a nice, sweet lemony flavor with a slightly herbaceous note from the lemongrass and green tea. I’m not sure I can pick out cranberry, maybe a hint? But mostly it’s reminding me of lemon drops, and I’m not mad about it. :)

Sweet, smooth, and comforting – very relaxing for the afternoon.

Cold Brew!

Whenever I get in new tea samples that first thing I do is open everything up and smell all the leaves because, well, how can you resist!? This is one of the samples from this order that stood out to me the most so I prioritized brewing it…

Honestly, it’s a pure delight! I’m not super surprised because Anne’s cranberry blends are always on point, but there’s something especially delicious about this super bright and vibrant lemon flavour too! It’s just such a nice balance of tart and sweet and both cranberry and lemon really pop. I thought it was just such a great summery refreshing tea.

So I have decided to renew my quarterly subscription for 52 teas. I have really enjoyed what I have gotten so far and I think 15 g for me is enough to enjoy a tea but also not be struggling to keep up and sip it down. :) Plus, lots of variety and delicious blends.

Preparation: Western
Tasting note: First opening the bag of the tea, it smelled very lemonade-y which was a nice surprise. Sipping it after it has cooled down, it is a pretty mild green. It has a light bit of citrus but not enough to be considered strongly tart or pithy.

I definitely love the package size in the 52teas subscription! I get about 4 or so cups for most teas, which is great for sampling, and doesn’t really clutter up the cupboard!

I cold-brewed this overnight, and it’s so good!

I think I’ll post this as May’s “Lemon Tea” from the scavenger hunt. I love the way the cranberry and lemon play together in this one. It’s pleasantly tart, but not so much that it causes me to pucker. Really refreshing.
