Sipdown (535)!

Recently placed an order with T by Daniel at the strong recommendation of a good friend who’s taste in tea I value pretty highly. This one wasn’t one of the full sizes I got, but a smaller single cup size sample sent as a bonus with my order.

I thought this one was phenomenal; it’s very robustly flavoured with decadent, smooth and buttery fresh coconut notes accented with creamy, sweet raspberry. I really like the the raspberry is almost more of a pastry raspberry instead of acidic or tangy because it just so strongly compliments the coconut and highlights a style of raspberry profile that I haven’t had in what feels like ages…

This also reminds me of DAVIDsTEA’s Fantasy Island but, from what I can recall of that tea, I think this one is actually better overall. The flavours are better balanced and feel a little more natural. I actually wish this was listed on the T By Daniel website (it’s currently not on the site at all) because it’s something I actually would order a larger size of based on the sample.

Cold Brew Sipdown (536)!

This one was so sweet that I couldn’t finish more than one or two sips of it. I was literally gagging because of the intensity and I can’t possibly imagine a situation in which ANYONE would fine this tea to be enjoyable. Finishing it off is such a huge relief. I’ll be happy if I never experience another tea from this company for the rest of my tea drinking life…

And sadly, that just makes me curious to taste it… not, mind, to have to drink a whole cup of it…

Sipdown (537)!

Another bagged tea that I’m happy to have finished off. This one was nice; the last cup was basically a reiteration of every cup I’ve had prior, perhaps with just slightly more of that wood-y kind of element? Sweet and natural overall though; and very much what was advertised.

Man, I need to get my ass into high gear with these sipdowns!

This is one that needed to happen; the tea is only average overall so there’s no reason to keep it on hand. This cup was fine; buttery and floral with overarching vegetal elements such as notes of asparagus. Not bad, but not great. Easy to mindlessly sip.

Hot latte.

Tastes very soft and dainty with vanilla sponge cake, lemon curd, and honey notes. Very light black pepper undertones that are a touch throat tickley. There’s something else super familiar/Deja Vu-like about the taste too though that I can’t put my finger on flavour wise, though, and it’s driving me INSANE.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

Not as bold of a flavour as I remember from last time; still a nice combo of vanilla, chocolate, and toasted hazelnut though and a blend I can get on board with flavour wise. It’s kind of that simple…

Not gonna lie, I was disappointed to see this one come back for the summer.

I mean, I get that it was a crowd favourite but personally I just wasn’t impressed by it. I also think that DT has such a strong repertoire of summery iced teas that they could have brought back instead that would have been much more unique additions (if only temporary) to the collection. Like, for example, my beloved Tropicalia. However things like Shooting Starfruit, Sangria, Pineapple Mimosa, Sour Watermelon, Pom Diggity/Pom Tango, or Hard Candy all would have brought more to the table in my own opinion.

I had to have at least one cup of this one though just to keep myself refreshed on it/make sure my product knowledge is still on point – I chose to have it iced because that’s how we sell it for the most part. It’s not overly sweet or tart, and not weak or watery either; just a nice smooth, mellow profile with lots of fruit notes. I think it leans a little more strawberry than lemonade; with hints of apple and papaya. It’s definitely refreshing; I can’t argue that. Reminds me so much of Electric Lemonade though.

And again; it’s not that I think it’s a bad tea – I just don’t find it to be anything unique or think it contributes any sort of flavour that isn’t already represented in the tea wall in some way. There’s A LOT of lemon in the tea wall, and a lot of strawberry as well. There’s even already a tea with strawberry and lemon…

I am happy for the people who loved this one and got to have it return, though.

Too much ginger and not enough pear/quince in this mug. I wanted fruit with a hint of spice, and not the other way around. C’est la vie.

Hot mug, grandpa style.

First half of this one was just fine; sweet, and refreshing spearmint with floral undertones. I liked how fresh everything was and the crispness of the flavours. Grandpa style was a mistake though because it was a good twenty minutes until I could get back to the mug to finish off the second half and by then it was so intense and cloying. The lavender was soapy, and the spearmint so rich that I was kind of gagging on it. Such a big, negative turn around – but it all comes down to the steep method and not the tea itself.

Decently smooth lemon white tea with only hints of ginger; kind of tasting like a hot lemon water to be honest. I guess, in a way, that’s what it was anyway? The mug was cut short though; I had it on the back of the counter and a tea guide accidentally spilled a tin of tea and a lot of the leaf fell into my mug. Probably drank about half of it though, and it was fine. Would be better suited as a sick tea sort of thing though, I think.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
