drank Horchacha by DAVIDsTEA
15733 tasting notes

New collection launch at DT today; lots of really cool llama themed stuff. I’m not totally sure how this collection’s tea/animal theme ties into the last one though: if someone wants to explain the connection between toucans, succulents, and llamas & beets, pears, peaches, and horchata to me then I am all ears

I had this one as a latte; it only seemed right since horchata is a creamy drink. I’ll be honest, I’ve never had straight horchata before but I have had my fair share of rumchata which I know is similar but just boozey. So I was kind of looking for something comparable to that in terms of flavour. I really enjoyed the flavour of this one all latte-d up, but I struggled finding a good way to articulate what it tasted like/reminded me of. I think what I ended up comparing it to when I was talking to a coworker about it was a mix of the following teas; Let It Snow, Spice is Right, Carrot Cupcake, and Sticky Rice Oolong. ’Cause really, it is different parts of all of those teas just mashed together. Let me elaborate though…

The overall creaminess is very similar to Let It Snow, as if the amount of green tea base that comes through in the overall taste. Plus, both blends have some very soft/gentle spice to them. Spice Is Right is another green blend heavily spiced; the clove is the connector here, I think. With Carrot Cupcake, I think the thing that most connects this tea to that blend is the weird whipped cream flavouring that they both share; however, they also both have the same sort of spices. And finally this is similar to Sticky Rice Oolong because of the rice flavour that both blends share – specifically the pandan leaves which have a really strong rice flavour.

I think I do want to buy a little of this (probably less that 50g) for at home; but I actually own another Horchata green tea already – one from A Quarter To Tea. I haven’t tried it yet, so I want to do that and see if it’s better than this one before I go and buy any of this for at home. It’s quite interesting though – and I can definitely see it being a go to latte at work for the next little bit.

Didn’t really get any flavour out of the cold brew I did of this not too long ego, but now I’m drinking this one hot and it’s definitely flavourful – but in a weird way? Hard to describe, exactly, but it tastes like a sort of mix of apricot, black licorice, smoke, caramel, and papaya notes!? I’m digging it though. Just – what even is this flavour combination!?

Anyway – thanks VariaTEA

Made this one in a tea press with a little lemon honey to take to work.

We ended up getting pretty busy during the day and I really didn’t have time to drink my tea at all. Then, after the store closed it was a Merch Flip to put out all the super cute new llama stuff that came out today. So, I didn’t really get a chance to enjoy this until that Merch Flip – and by then it was definitely cold. However, I don’t think it being cold made it any less tasty. Instead, it just made it more reminiscent of a raspberry/lemon infused apple juice sort of flavour because it was an especially apple note heavy cuppa.

Hydrating, though! And honestly, that late in the day and moving around all that stock I think iced/chilled/cold was really the way to go anyway for tea.

Had a killer migraine on Sunday so I was really favouring mint and eucalyptus blends – and guess which tea I own has a whole lot of BOTH of those things!? That’s right – this one!

So, I didn’t do my crazy “triple strength” brewing method this time because I don’t actually have a cold and wasn’t having issues with normal breathing. However, even just brewing this are normal strength produces a pretty intense cuppa. Lots and LOTS of mint, but really I think it was the eucalyptus that actually provided me with a sense of relief and comfort from my migraine. I mean, pain killers were the thing that did the most help: tea should not replace medicine. However, this was an aid for sure.

Drank on the way home from work; wanted something thick and full bodied with shou earthiness but other flavours as well. Rice seemed perfect; it’s a very comforting tea and I like the idea of finishing off the work day with a relaxing blend…

This was tasty, but far more weighted towards the shou than the rice. Rice was still present, but more muted than I’m accustomed to tasting with this tea. I think I likely didn’t let it steep long enough; I didn’t want the pyramid bag steeping the entire time I was on the bus so I threw it out right before I got on – which was probably only like a two minute steep time!?

It still achieved that relaxing/stressing releasing effect I was going for though.

Broke into my stash of this one because I was craving something very sweet and creamy, and I thought that the mint in this would be somewhat refreshing as well considering how hot it’s been as of late.

It was good; definitely hit all of those creamy dessert cravings I was having what with the surplus of white chocolate in the blend. Seriously, I got SO MANY white chocolate chips in the scoop that I measured out. The flip to that, though, is that because there were so many white chocolate bits there was a lot less candy cane so while it was minty it wasn’t in your face “slap me with how refreshing you are” minty. Still good though! I kind of secretly/low key hope this comes back for Christmas – it’s so sugary/sweet and I typically hate that in a tea, but it’s such a guilty pleasure indulgence blend for me that I almost don’t care…

So, our city now has two Board Game cafes – one recently opened up. This one is a bit different from the other in that they serve alcohol and also just have a full menu just like a restaurant would so that you can eat/drink while you play. The other cafe just sells coffee and various baked goods…

So, the fam jam and I were there earlier in the week to check it out and I saw that they sold matcha lattes so of course I opted for that instead of coffee or alcohol. It was ok; about the quality I’d expect from a cafe that doesn’t really specialize in tea at all. So, that is to say it was VERY sweet/sugared up and that I found multiple matcha clumps in the bottom of the mug from poor whisking/lack of sifting.

Not bad for the price though.

As an iced latte during a shift where I was feeling especially tired and needed a pick me up.

I can’t even remember when the last time I had this tea hot was; it’s just such a good dessert profile and because it reminds me a lot of a Banana Split type of flavour it’s something that feels more well suited for iced tea. Very strong artificial/candy banana notes in this cup, and then a more chocolate heavy finish. There were a few sips which did seem a touch soapy at first, but then the sweetness/richness just seemed to overtake those elements. Sometimes I wish the flavour felt more diverse other than those two main elements (banana/chocolate), though…

Had this late into the evening earlier in the week.

I was so tired though, and I downed this pretty quickly and without a whole lot of thought so unfortunately I can’t really say what it tasted like since I simply wasn’t paying attention. I mean, smooth is an obvious one because I definitely would have noticed had it been really bitter or astringent. I had picked it out because when I cracked open the package it just had this lovely woody aroma to the dry leaf, but I don’t even know if that translated into the cup or not.

Shrug.

drank Maple Matcha by DAVIDsTEA

Matcha shot from work a few days ago; I was feeling tired and needed a quick pick me up. This was very sweet and really maple syrup like in terms of, well, everything. Everything other than mouthfeel that is – it was too thin/not syrupy enough to actually be like maple syrup in that regard. Sort of made me want waffles…

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
