Where is everyone?
Is it just me, or has everyone disappeared from Steepster? I used to have to clike the “See More” button 3 times in order to see the whole day’s posts, and now I don’t even have to click it at all because no one’s updating. Anyone else noticing this? Or do I just need to follow some new people :)
Think warmer weather’s slowing down the tea consumption? Less to log? (I am a warm weather junkie, but it makes me a little melancholy when it’s too hot to drink more than one morning cuppa. Iced just isn’t the same…)
I was thinking the same thing Shanti. Good time for a steepster contest- our chances would be up! lol. J/k, but yeah there are people I haven’t heard from in months.
I was just wondering that myself. I think gmathis is partially right; now that it’s so hot I’m not drinking as much tea. But you’d think that people would just switch over to iced tea in the warm weather; that’s what I’m doing.
Also, I think people here are active in spurts. Like, when I initially joined Steepster I was really active for about a month or so. Then the novelty wore off and I stopped coming on as much. But after a month of “quitting” Steepster, I came back. So maybe a lot of people have just grown tired of it temporarily.
So hot? I woke up to 5in of snow on Thurs! lol. But it was in the 70s- and even 80 one day, last week.
It’s getting pretty hot in Texas, unfortunately. I really really miss Jersey weather (and Jersey friends and Jersey laws and Jersey drivers and Jersey cultural diversity, etc.). You’re so lucky you’re still getting snow!
Only lucky cuz it didn’t mess up my plans. I don’t get it. Our minor league base ball team was supposed to have their season opener that nite. It’s April in WI and the snow was supposed to be done by afternoon (it actually ended quite a bit before that I believe), and the game was still postponed! I don’t get it. I don’t care at all about baseball, but I still thought it was crazy.
Hahaha that’s actually pretty funny. People here totally overreact to snow because they really don’t get much here; it’s kind of hilarious, only since I grew up in the north east. My college (in TX) shut down for many days because of an inch or two of snow. People start rushing to the food stores and buy up all the bread, and then they drive home at 5 MPH with their hazard lights on. But in their defense, this was a particularly snowy winter (for TX standards, anyway).
I heard a couple yrs ago Raleigh, NC got a half inch on a weekday afternoon… so what did the schools do? They kept the kids over nite! Do you have any idea how much that would tick me off?! LOL! My boyfriend lives in SC and I might be going to spend Christmas with his family (in Tampa, FL actually)… I can’t even imagine not having a white Christmas. I get cranky when we don’t get them here.
I wish my high school had been like the one in NC. They never gave us snow days or delays. Everyone used to get into car accidents heading to school or work. Imagine bussed packed with children sliding around on the roads. My math teacher broke her wrist slipping on the ice on her way into the school, and my friends got into accidents driving to school senior year. But we had some of the highest SAT scores in the country! So that’s all the administrators cared about.
Anywho.
Yeah, it’s the same with me. I was on facebook all the time when I first went on, then got bored pretty quickly after I set up my page and found everyone I knew who was on — most of my friends are incredibly busy as am I and are only on sporadically. I’ve been more stimulated by the novelty here because it’s coupled with tasting teas, so there’s always more to do, and since I’m in full blown obsession mode with this new passtime I’m here quite a bit in my (almost nonexistent) free time.
I’m here… who else do you need?
Honestly? There’s a lot of negativity present in some places (like the forums) and I just get tired of reading it, so I don’t visit here as often as I drink tea. I even asked if I could ban some of the “offenders” from commenting in my logs, but was told just to delete their comments. That kinda doesn’t address the POINT.
What brings us together is a love of tea, so why is there so much complaining about how this or that vendor doesn’t do things precisely the way “we” want them to, over and over? Okay, make your point…. but move on already!
I know exactly what you mean. Have you emailed Jason about this? I suggest you do…there were some members on here that kept me away and made the discussion forums not a fun place to be. There is no excuse for people to tear others down about something as simple and enjoyable like tea!
There’s nothing wrong w/ wanting to improve the industry. Companies making changes and improvements that customers want increases profit so by voicing our complaints we’re actually doing them a favor. Each person can use steepster the way s/he wants- but as long as it’s done so respectfully no one should dictate that. I’m trying to phrase this as respectfully as possible, but if you don’t like that certain users have concerns we’re comfortable voicing so change takes place then you are more than welcome to, in your words, “move on” past that thread. You might want to be aware that this post can, to some people, be taken as complaining itself.
Key word: “respectfully”. Certain members (but not all) seem to have no conception of that word, and personally I’m tired of having to read through all of the negativity so I usually avoid the discussion board altogether. I know that the actions of these members has definitely made me less interested in the site.
Shanti – yes, I have talked to Jason, and was told to just delete comments from my logs. shrug
Cofftea – nothing wrong with that, no. But, not everyone is going to agree on everything, and beating people over the head with one person’s opinion doesn’t do anything to “improve the industry” for people who don’t agree with that one person’s opinion!
Also, IMO, if there’s a specific problem with a vendor, the proper way to work to improve relations with that vendor is to communicate with them; not complain about them on a forum that they may or may not see.
I know this is complaining itself, but it’s answering a direct question. Why are some people not on Steepster as much? Well, this is why I’m not here as much.
Denisend, I think that you are referencing a discussion I started today. It was not meant to be a negative discussion. I’ve noticed that tea merchants sometimes visit these forums and I thought it was not a bad idea to address some topics about why one might avoid—-or seek out—particular merchants. I apologize if I have offended you.
For myself, I have found the forum here particularly helpful. I’ve asked numerous questions and received excellent advice aboutand several topics. I never felt that anyone was putting me down for my relative lack of knowledge. If I had to characterize the forum I would say “helpful”, “friendly,” and “tea-loving”.
Jason has listed the parameters of forum use, so you can certainly complain to him.
Doulton – no, I’m not referring to your thread. I can easily avoid that. It’s when the complaints show up in totally unrelated topics that I get annoyed.

that gives me an idea i will go suggest, in livejournal you can disable comments – perhaps that should be an option for each user? would that help you and perhaps others be able to better use steepster and avoid the unrelated bashing?

Naw, I’m kidding. I’ve mainly been trying to clear out my cupboard so I haven’t been logging as much. Well that and I’ve been really busy lately. Hopefully my schedule clears up in a month or two.
That being said, where’s teaplz and takgoti! Boo for work and school!
My very first comment made on my page was very negative. I thought about leaving. Instead, I deleted the comment and moved forward. (I have not seen or heard from that person again) I spend a lot of time here each day, but I don’t make very many comments. I am really glad I stayed around for the TTB….I can’t wait to get it in Texas:) I like having people around that get “it” because some members of my family don’t seem to understand why I have devoted an entire shelf in the pantry to tea…my comment, “I needed the shelf so I could see what tea I have!”
oh man, luckily my mom gets it, she does have a whole pantry shelf of tea :)
the people i live with get that i am a tea crazy person, and enjoying trying tea, but avoid making it unless i work out the directions (3 tsp, 5 min, boiling) as they’re afraid to ruin the tea, i wonder how many people like them are afraid of tea?

Hi threewales, I’m sorry that someone commented like that to you, especially when you just started using Steepster. I was lucky enough to meet really nice people when I first joined, but yeah…I’ve definitely seen some straight up rude comments to new Steepsterites which is just uncalled for.
Personally I am getting tired of seeing these negative comments. There’s only so much you can delete, especially when those people are commenting on discussion posts that are public…
My husband doesn’t really “get” it, but he does understand that I love tea and that is enough for him, and he supports my love for it. He’s a sweetie!
I am sorry that you’ve witnessed so much negativity, that is never pleasant, in fact, it is why I discontinued visiting the forum on another website I used to frequent (not a tea website though). I do hope that I didn’t say anything to offend. I do try to be as respectful as I can. I realize that I have been kind of negative toward a certain vendor, and I hope that isn’t the cause of these feelings. If it is, I sincerely apologize.
No worries from me, I just enjoy the chatter about tea. I do appreciate all of your heart felt comments:)
Sorry folks are seeing negative stuff. I haven’t had that experience here, this is a much nicer place than many venues online, reminds me a little of the old CompuServe gamers’ forum before the AOL crowd came in ;-) ahhh the good old days…
Hey 3whales! I just followed you and look forward to leaving your some positive comments on your tealogs in the future. I’ve also had some random negative comments on my tealogs, from non-regulars pretty much. But I was lucky to meet some nice people early on on here. I’m glad you’ve stuck around. Oh, and I love yellow.
