Ideas for cleaning external adhesive off of old tea tins and method for applying washi paper?
Hi all,
I want to reuse some my old tea tins from other tea brands that have paper labels or lots of adhesive on them, and wrap them in decorative papers. I think I found a way to apply the paper to them once the old labeling is removed.I am not sure how well this method works but it was going to be where I started. http://www.thirstyfortea.com/2013/12/18/diy-japanese-tea-tins/
My big question: what do you all reccommend to remove the adhesive and paper labels from the tins?
Also, has any one repurposed and redecorated their old tins and have any tips or supplies they liked using or was effective? Anything I should stay away from?

I am not having experience with tea tins, but at work I use 3M Industrial Cleaner for removing labels. It works great, doesn’t remove colors. However not sure if food-safe, so I recommend deep cleaning afterwards.
WD-40 is also pretty effective and may be something you have sitting around already. But the same goes, clean very well before using.
At a past job, we used a product called Goo Gone to remove labels and label adhesive, and it worked quite well.
I can usually get adhesives off tins with rubbing alcohol and/or soap & water (with prompt and thorough drying).
I soak the tins in water and then I use Goo Gone. Then I put the tin through the dishwasher to make sure all the Goo Gone is …. gone before I put anything in the tin.
