10 Tasting Notes
Not going to lie – I only picked up this tea because the DavidsTea employee was pushing it pretty hard and I had 50g of free tea to cash in. Also it smelled like chocolate and with the new year on the rise, I was pretty intrigued by a guilt-free chocolate anything.
I’m getting over a wicked bout of the flu and after four days of eating and drinking nothing but one egg and multiple bottles of gatorade I am finally able to drink tea again – WOW did this tea surpass my expectations! I expected it to be cocoa flavoured but weak, sort of tasteless and watery, like many flavoured black teas – but instead it feels earthy and deep and rich. The internet suggests it’s the chaga mushroom that provides this depth. Note that I did add a drop of milk to it but I have to say, this literally tastes like an unsweetened hot chocolate. Definitely would recommend!
Flavors: Chocolate, Creamy, Earth, Mushrooms
Oh man I don’t know why this tea has such a low rating because I got a sampler of this in a gift pack, gave it a shot and LOVED it. I expected it to just taste fruity, as I usually have trouble distinguishing between different fruity teas (and I usually prefer more nutty or floral teas) and I was wondering how they’d get the “grilled” part of the pineapple in the tea.
Which is why when I brewed it and got an immediate smell of pineapple and popped rice I knew it would be a strong pineapple / genmaicha blend that I’d love. And I was right. Solidly enjoyed the pot of tea I made from this sample, and I will be going to Davids tomorrow to pick up 100g of this amazing elixir. It’s so delicious!!
Flavors: Pineapple, Smoke, Summer, Toasted Rice
Preparation
I’m a DAVIDsTEA person and I had never actually bought a tea from Teavana before, so I decided to try it out. I bought this tea because I usually like mates and it smelled incredible (even though at teavana they apparently only fan the air next to the tea into your face, instead of actually letting you smell it like at DAVIDs… am I bitter?).
I brewed a pot of it and was sorely disappointed. It looks like sludge and instead of the chocolatey, bright, almost wood-ish smell it has when its dry, it has an almost burnt smell when it’s steeped. It tasted like nothing. I found myself struggling to try and drink the tea as fast as I could just to make it go away.
Would not buy again, and honestly I probably wouldn’t shop at Teavana again.
I actually really like this tea. I find it tastes similar to the Long Life Oolong by DT, but because this tea has more leaves and fewer “bits” than LLO, you get more cups out of it and it has higher-quality resteeps. I didn’t find the kombucha flavour overpowering either.
Flavors: Peach
Preparation
This is one of my absolute favourite teas. I love that as soon as I pour in the water, the leaves expand significantly – the smell is like a light vanilla with some floral-ness to it. For some reason when I drink this tea it tastes so full and wonderful that it almost seems…thick! Unbelievable.
I’m not really sure why this tea has such a high rating. I think it smells exceptional, but it kind of tastes like…. nothing. Maybe I steeped it too long but it tasted kind of bitter, but not tart in an appetizing sense. It’s not bad, it’s fine if you just think of it as plain tea, but I’m not sure I’m tasting the notes in the tea’s description.
Preparation
I was a little hesitant to buy the steeper at first, since the price seemed, well, kind of steep. Honestly though it was one of the best investments I have made! I use it all the time, it is so easy to clean, the stream out the bottom really works and I just love that you can see the tea leaves saturate and expand in the pot. Wonderful invention, I’d recommend it to anyone.
