From Zen Tara Tea

Houjicha is a Japanese tradition, made with big, coarse, green tea leaves from some of the last harvests of the year which are steamed, dried and then roasted in small batch ovens. Our special grade Houjicha requires precise roasting time and temperature control. The roasting reduces the amount of caffeine, making Houjicha an ideal tea to drink in the evening and after meals. The flavor is buttery, smooth, toasty and slightly smoky without any bitterness or astringency noticeable in some green teas.

This is another hojicha/houjicha that will likely need to grow on me to really appreciate it. If found it to have a bit of a woodsy flavor and a lightness of body. It also has a vague, floral aftertaste that I can’t really place- almost like a subtle osmanthus.

I’m sitting here at Zen Tara Tea in Bethesda sipping on one of their iced teas of the day. So nice and refreshing, especially since it’s 93 degrees outside!

Were you sipping houjicha? I can’t imagine it iced.

Indeed, it was their featured iced tea that day. I haven’t tasted it in a while, though.
