From Yunnan Sourcing

Hui Long Zhai lies in the western part of the county of Teng Chong (Bao Shan Prefecture), a mountainous region with peaks as high as 3000 meters bordering Myanmar. Relatively cool weather and high altitude conditions makes this one of the latest picked “first flush” teas in Yunnan, it is picked in the late part of April and in September. Buds and leaves are picked together just as they sprout and are then wok-fired by hand for a very short time but at a high temperature. The result is a tea with longer shelf life, and more importantly a high level of aroma when brewed! This tea is nutty with a fast huigan, but is a little more bitter and stimulating than Simao area green teas! My personal new favorite green tea! A good choice for a morning wake up brew or a brief departure from raw pu-erh!

With a delicate touch, this tea pops with light, buttery, nutty, vegetal, and nectar sweet notes. I’ve found a hard time finding Chinese greens I like, but this one is great. You only need short infusions of low-temperature water, ~170ºF, for it to give a fairly pale but flavorful liquor, and beyond that can yield overpowering and off-putting bitterness and astringency.

A solid Chinese green. I’m still fairly new to the side of Chinese green teas, being when it comes to greens, I’ve usually just stuck with Japanese. This is my first experience with a green from Yunnan Sourcing. I enjoyed this tea, however like the other people have said on this, the flavor is a little too light, not exactly a bad thing, but when coming from a history of Sencha, it seems a little lack luster. Maybe I’m just biased. It does however hold some pretty endearing qualities. It has a very pleasant Umami flavor, and holds a nice creamy corn note. The second infusion is my personal favorite, because it brings up a slight oceanic flavor that gives it a little more complexity. This isn’t anything mind blowing, but it still a well suited green. I think I prefer this brewing “grandpa style,” but sits nice in a larger gaiwan too.

Lewis & Clark Traveling Teabox – Tea #11
A solid green tea with twisted wirey leaves. The flavor is a bit on the light side, but it has the creamed corn flavor I love. Maybe my palate hasn’t gotten around to figure out these flavors yet… they’re all “creamed corn” to me. Not much else for me to say, sadly, though this could be a dependable green to have in the cupboard.

I think this is the first green I’ve had from Yunnan Sourcing, but I have loved all of their other teas so far, so I have high expectations. :) The leaves are slender and formed into slight curls and loops, and they’re grey/green/blue in color. Dry scent is sweet and somewhat vegetal with some oats. I did a 2 minute steep because I felt like it. :D

Once brewed, it smells vegetal in the squash/spinach sense and also somewhat creamy and nutty/grainy. This is a mild and sweet green, similar to the last one I tried. The vegetal component of it reminds me of butternut squash or zucchini and is very creamy. I also get a little bit of a nutty component to this one, perhaps cashew? Overall, sweet and mild and a nice tea for relaxing while watching a movie. :)

This is the spring 2014 version

Kinda sorta nutty, roasty flavored, but still nice and green.

Tasty.

But it doesn’t pair well with chocolate and peanut butter.

Also, don’t oversteep or this gets really bitter and nasty.
