From white2tea

Anhua heicha fu zhuan, or fu brick, is a post fermented tea from Hunan province in China that contains “golden flowers” [eurotium cristatum].

After we fell in love with our 2018 sun fu, we commissioned a 2021 production from the very same producer.

A wonderful, well rounded fu brick. Thick and rich with plenty of feeling, but without being too overwhelming for the daily cup. Sweet and aromatic daily fu that can be aged further or drank right away.

Each brick is ~1000g of pressed tea.

Love a good bit of research to go along with a good gong fu session. Holy smokes. There is a ton of research being done on this tea! Type in “eurotium cristatum golden flower” and the amount of articles that come up is amazing. For a short summary on findings, it appears that the more golden flower present, the better the quality of this heicha. In the studies, eurotium cristatum has shown to increase relief from things like ulcerative colitis, hypertension, etc. Now I need to find a tea to help my mom-in-law and husband with their weird blood disease (very low platelets).

This mixed with a hojicha would be an interesting flavor! Frothed milk aroma in the initial rinse. Frothed milk is also in the flavor. It is slightly earthy with rich, dark dry soil and dry bark. There is a hint of smokiness as well. After 3 steepings there are still some parts that remain dry.

Gongfu!

I’ve been waiting to steep up until a bright, sunny day when I had lots of time to really sit with the tea. Even from the first infusions, this is a warm and cozy tea. There’s a consistent gentle honey sweetness throughout, but what’s really pulling me in are the medium bodied notes of fluffy fresh baked brown bread and wild rice. As the steeps seems to get thicker and more syrupy as this tea session progresses, I’m getting a slight bit of a fruity apple undertone as well. It’s somewhere between a sweet honey & custard notes of a Mutsu or Golden Delicious, but with the creamy floral tenderness of white apple – especially evident in the finishing notes.

I can’t say, based on this session, that it’s something I would necessarily want to repurchase but I am very happy that I decided to order it and I think it’ll be enjoyable to finish this sample off at my leisure.
