I’m going through all my Whispering Pines teas again because all the black teas I’ve gotten from them seem to be blurring together. I can’t really remember distinctions or what I really liked and what was just alright. It’s probly my head since I’ve tried so many teas since I got these. But it’s a good excuse to drink them all again I guess. Lol.
This one wasn’t too bad, though it’s a lot more ‘meh’ than I remember it being. Cedary smell to the brew, though it tastes completely different. Malty and slightly fruity. I like it better with a bit of Truvia added, but not too much or it’d overpower the rest of the tea I’d think.
But again, this one I find unremarkable. I’ll finish what I have, but I probly won’t be reordering.

Butiki Taste Testing Traveling Tea Box – Tea #2
I loved seeing a Whispering Pines tea in the teabox, but it didn’t look like this one had much love on Steepster. A Yunnan from WP without much love? What?

Steep #1 // a few minutes after boiling // 3 min
I did use more than a teaspoon for this cup accidentally, maybe that made the difference of me LOVING it. It doesn’t really seem like a Yunnan to me though, especially with all this smoke. Closer to a Lapsang Souchong than a Keemun even. This is a very dark cup – dark burgundy in color, so I’m not sure where the “light” flavor is coming from. It has enough bite to it, but it doesn’t seem like I overdid the leaves.

Steep #2 // a few minutes after boiling // 3 min
Another really nice cup – it doesn’t have the oversteeped leaves flavor. Maybe everyone just needed to use more leaves? But that would be more smoke than many people want to handle. Not too much smoke for me though!

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Not a very impressive Yunnan, sadly. I discontinued this a long while back :)

This came from the Butiki Educational Traveling Tea Box, but since it is labeled as a Whispering Pines tea I thought I’d put it here rather than under Random Steepings.

There is a strong cedar smell to the dry leaves. The leaves are semi-long and wiry, tightly wound and, of course, golden and black in color. Once steeped the cedar smell diminishes quite a bit. The infusion taste of forest floor with notes of cedar. As the tea cools there is a honey like note at the end of the sip.

I really enjoyed this tea. It’s not my favorite, but it is a good consistent Yunnan.
