My review is for the coarse cut Egyptian organic spearmint. Like a lot of people, I purchased this one with the intention of mixing it with other things, like green tea, but I thought I would try drinking it plain tonight.

I don’t know if I’ve ever had a straight tisane of spearmint but I’m enjoying it. Sometimes peppermint gives me reflux but the spearmint has a lot less menthol in it, which will be better for me. I steeped mine for 5 minutes in a large mug with about 1 tsb. of leaf, it is pretty strong. I felt the need to add a bit of agave to it. This is pretty nice though, I’m glad I bought it and will welcome it to my stash of herbal-y things. There isn’t a whole lot more to say. :)

I’m a mint fiend, but I agree that spearmint is much gentler in terms of taste and reflux! Peppermint can set off ‘heartburn’ for me sometimes, but spearmint rarely does. All hail spearmint!

TeaBrat

yes, it is a lot more gentle, did not give me any problems at all… now to make some moroccan mint!

Scott B

Very nice. What type of tea base do you use? Or do you try different bases?

TeaBrat

I try different ones a lot. Herbs are great for mixing into things, I also like lemongrass, rose petals and verbena, those are some of my other faves.

Missy

What does verbena taste like?

TeaBrat

@Missy – it’s an herb with a citrusy kind of flavor, a bit lemon-lime but not tart.

Cheryl

We share the spearmint love!

Missy

Thanks! I’ve seen it around and wondered what it was like. I’ll have to give a whirl some day.

ScottTeaMan

I still have some of the organic spearmint harvested in the USA. I like spearmint alot, but not near as much as the aroma and taste of peppermint. Moroccan mint is often used with a green gunpowder base.

Scott B

How much spearmint would you add to a teaspoon of plain gunpowder green? I know everyone’s preference may be different, but I am looking for at least a starting point for experimentation.

TeaBrat

Try half and half…

Scott B

Okay, thanks.

Bonnie

If you need to order exotic mint to plant there’s a wonderful Organic Grower in Squaw Valley California that has zillions of herbs and mint varieties that ships everywhere. I received 8 types last year and saved the seeds. Amy is lucky to be in a city that has fresh herbs year round and the best organic market on the bay!

ScottTeaMan

I usually don’t blend green teas, half & half would be good for a spearmint/gunpowder tea, Maybe 2 to 1 for a gunpowder/peppermint tea, since peppermint is a stronger herb.

TeaBrat

Bonnie- I wish I had somewhere to plant things but I live in an apartment and can barely keep a houseplant alive. :)

Good thing I ordered from Upton today – this was an unexpected sipdown as well.

I feel gross. Just in time for my 5 day break from work, too. But at least I had enough of this and the lemongrass tea to settle my stomach. Soup and tea on the couch and maybe some Black Friday tea orders and all will be well (I hope!).

Skulleigh

Feel better!

Fjellrev

Hope you feel better too!

Boring tea log tonight. My tummy is going through all sorts of chaos today. I don’t even want to put dinner in there. ugh. Mint is supposed to be good for tummies, so I busted this out. It tastes kinda funky today. Not sure if it’s the kettle. I’m on the market for a glass one.

Anyways, classic spearmint. sweet and fresh. Couldn’t ask for anything more.

I wonder if ginger would work for me or if it’s only good for nausea? I’ll try that next if this spearmint fails me. :(

Em

Usually ginger helps settle my stomach. I would try that. Praying you feel better soon.

Mercuryhime

Em, you are sweet. :) I’ve experienced the power of ginger for nausea, but that’s not the problem I have. Let’s not get specific. haha Does it work for all tummy issues?

Em

It’s worth a shot :)

Mercuryhime

So true! :)

mrs.stenhouse12

Ginger is my miracle cure for any tummy ailment, I’d definitely give it a shot!

Finishing this up and decupboarding.

There’s not a lot to say about it except that it’s a really nice spearmint, if you are looking for plain spearmint. I had fun tasting a hot cup of plain spearmint tisane a few times, but mostly I found myself adding peppermint and tarragon to this and trying to hit the combination that would mimic Tazo’s Refresh. I never quite found it and frankly, I think I’d be much more likely to buy Refresh as a “plain” mint tisane even though it’s a blend of three flavors, just because I like how they play off of each other. I’m not likely to buy this again, just because if I were going to have a single mint tisane I’d pick peppermint.

I am not remotely a person who blends teas at all, but I bought this to try to mix in some greens to make Moroccan Mint at home. I was expecting a coarse cut to have much bigger pieces, but they are fairly small in my opinion-however, they won’t fall through an infuser. The aroma is amazing-so light and fresh and minty.

First up to mix this with was Upton’s Special Grade Temple of Heaven Gunpowder Green. I did a one to one blend courtesy of Amy oh’s suggestion (one teaspoon each infused in an 8 ounce mug). Brewed at 180 for 3 minutes it came out perfect. It smelled great and tasted just like TG’s Moroccan Mint that I like so much-although TG adds natural flavoring to it. Why? It tastes the same without it. Silly. I had this without sugar because it is very sweet and does not need it. It probably wouldn’t hurt to add it though.

I’ll definitely be looking to ice some of this over the weekend. And I might try this as an herbal blend just to see how it goes. I am very happy about this purchase.

For technicalities, mine is labeled as Organic Spearmint BH45 (from Egypt).

I bought a 50g packet of this while ordering samples, because I love Adagio’s and thought they’d be (basically) the same. I made it according to instructions and do remember steeping Adagio’s closer to 10 minutes, so that could be the difference here … but this one is weak compared to Adagio’s. Added a tbs. of honey for sweetness and this is “ok” but not as yummy.

Have some of Stash’s on it’s way (if they’d ever ship my order from Monday…must be swamped from sale), so will compare all 3 when it gets here.
