From The Tea Emporium

“Traditional ‘tea’ from Latin America. It is said that Mate is a natural hunger and thirst suppressor. A slight twist on the traditional Mate. Toasted Mate with cocoa, sunflower petals, almond bits, cactus flowers and cornflower blossoms. A great energy and immune system booster.
Tip: Use 1tsp per 6oz cup; heat fresh water to a boil; let steep 3-5 minutes.”

This is one of my all-time faves in the Toronto area! Perhaps it’s not proper, but I prepare it in a French Press and add honey and milk to full-boiled water and let it steep for about 5 minutes. I also will add more hot water up to three times.

This Mate Chino is the first and best toasted cocoa flavoured Mate that I’ve tried—I’ve found that other imposters (lol) have an artificial chocolate taste that is a bit too strong and chemically for my liking—I don’t like to drink potpourri! The Mate Chino from The Tea Emporium is beautifully balanced and of high quality—it’s a wonderful treat and a fantastic booster. I wish that it was naturally flavoured, but I have a feeling it’s not.

I really enjoy this tea as a pick me up when I’m writing papers late at night. I really like the sunny notes added by the sunflower which really counters the darker rest of the tea for me. I know that some of my friends love this tea, and that others can’t stand it, so it seems to be very much a matter of personal taste.

This is one of the few teas that I never grew to love. I tried, really I did! The upper effect is great, but the cocoa flavour does not blend well with the Mate at all. I ended up giving it away to a friend. Adding milk helped dampen the earthy/cocoa-ness that made me wretch, but not by enough for my standards. If this were the only Mate I could get my hands on, only then would I consider having another cup.

Decent, but not my favourite mate tea. I found it a little too bitter, and some of the flavours didn’t come through so well.
