From The Tao of Tea

Origin: Japan

Plucking Season: Early Spring

Introduction: A traditional Japanese favorite. Also known as ‘Brown Rice Tea’, Genmaicha is blend of Sencha ‘steamed green tea’ and two varietals of rice. One kind of rice develops a golden color and toasted flavor, whereas, the second varietal of rice used is known as ‘Mochi-Gome’ and ‘pops’ into white kernels. The fresh vegetal flavor of the green tea is carefully balanced with the toasted, nutty flavor of the rice. Green tea is known to contain high amounts of anti-oxidants that promote a healthy lifestyle. Low in caffeine.

Flavor Profile: Toasty, mealy, brown rice aroma and taste with a bright, grassy edge.

Ingredients: Green Tea Leaves, Toasted Brown Rice
Certified Organic by: Quality Assurance International (QAI)

I brewed this in my Travel Mug last night and brought it to work today. I walked to work and it was in my bag (which is a crossbody/messenger-type style). And when I arrived at my desk and took the mug out, the top of the inside was all foamy! Like really thick, latte-ish foam. It surprised me, but I guess it makes sense because matcha foams up and matcha and genmaicha are both green teas. It makes me wonder…do all teas foam or just green teas?

The tea itself tastes good, as always. Even cold like this. There is no bitterness.

I know my tazo Zen tea foams when I shake it up with ice. When I shake up my herbal and mate blends I haven’t seen the frothy foam. Weird, wonder what it is that causes that.

I tried googling it but nothing really comes up. Why does green tea foam—what makes it foam? I have to know!! lol Thanks for letting me know about the Tazo Zen foaming. It sounds like this is soley a green tea characteristic! Maybe it has something to do with the unoxidized chlorophyll.

Sipdown/restock #1 of the season! The October air helped us breeze through 100g of this in record time. It was perfect for yesterday’s Oct 13th. Between the creepy cloudy weather and low chill, this was the perfect toasty trea. Polishing off the second tin shouldn’t take long.

Sipdown no. 13 of 2018 (no. 369 total).

First day back at work. I set up the Breville with the last of this to steep tomorrow a.m. along with some extra sencha as I didn’t have enough of this.

It was particularly nice as a work tea today, what with the constant rain and the constant grey skies and all.

P.S. I said in my original note that I was going to count the two packets of this as separate sipdowns, but in the end I combined them in a single tin. So I’m only recording it once.

I’ve been drinking this tea on and off since college (30+years) and it is always a favorite.
