From The Republic of Tea

The rarest cup. This china White Tea is revered for its unmatched subtlety, complexity and mellow, sweet notes. Emperors had this tea plucked from their secret gardens to share with visiting dignitaries who reveled in the airy fragrance and pure flavor.

I am having this iced with a splash of cranberry juice. It is pretty yummy and refreshing in this heat.

This tasted a little bit on the green side of white teas. It was not particularly remarkable, but somewhat enjoyable. There were faint notes of berry – primarily goji berry, but maybe a little blackberry in there too. As the brew cooled, it became more astringent and not quite as good; I am not a fan of astringency in any tea.

I got this at a bookstore cafe and the water may have been too hot, causing some of that astringency. I’m not going to withhold a rating because with leaf pieces as small as were used for this, I’m somewhat sure that a good portion of the astringency would remain.

No matter how much time I steep it for, it always comes out bitter tasting. The only way to make it taste okay is to add 2 packets of sugar and a sprinkle of salt. It isnt that badiced, but still could be a lot better.

I figure by now I have sipped approximately 90% of all The Republic of Tea offerings and I have to say though being one of the very first Republic of Tea teas I tried this tea remains my favorite—as in 3-5 cups a day, every day. Delicate, gently invigorating (lightly caffeinated) and remarkably consistent. I think I have had a so-so barrel maybe three times in the last five years. If you start anywhere with The Republic of Tea and prefer milder teas than greens or blacks, you should really just start here. You will not be disappointed.
