From Teavana

From there website:

Gorgeous feather headdresses, exquisite turquoise jewels and the famed Latin cocoa and spicy chilies were all used as money to satisfy Aztecan nobility. This tea is a drink worthy of the gods with the taste of hand-dipped chocolate- covered strawberries emboldened with a kick of chilies that summon the Aztecs favorite luxuries. Each sip is as decadent as the last in this tasty, chocolaty treat.

My thanks to JustJames for a sample of this one. I had been wanting to try this one for a while, but the fruit in this one held me back, because I thought it would give the tea a tartness that I would not like.

The dry leaf smell is chocolaty and fruity. The tea brews to a light golden colour and smells like hot chocolate. It also tastes like hot chocolate. I didn’t get any of fruitiness of the tea until I started to get to the bottom of the cup. The fruit presented itself in light tart manner. I sadly didn’t get the chilies in this.

Glad I got try it.

I have only had the pleasure of having chili infused hot chocolate once or twice. That is what this tea tasted like to me! I didn’t get very much of the fruit whatsoever, but the chili spiced chocolate is a nice flavour. It is a lot smokier than I expected it to be. I did add a tiny bit of sugar, but now it is just like a super low cal cup of hot chocolate. I really enjoyed my cup but I think it will take a few more tried to really form a concrete opinion on this one.

In short, meh.

Expanding from there, there’s a subtle carob-y like chocolate flavor that dominates the cup, with strong, sweet cloying strawberry mixed in. And while I don’t pick up any spice notes, and it doesn’t remind me of mexican hot chocolate or anything of that sort, it’s not actually a horrible sip. The aftertaste is unfortunately artificial and leaves a film on the roof of my mouth.

A surprisingly nice flavor. Refreshingly chocolatey, a bit of spice but never overpowering. Add a little cream and it’s an excellent dessert.

I used a ridiculous 4tsp of tea 500ml (~18oz) cup of tea.
That is a ridiculous quantity!
However, the tea it produced was good. I have brewed it before using recommended tea amounts, and the result was weak and watery.

Anyway, this time it is chocolatey, a super muddy looking brew, with a touch of something sightly sour and fruity, I would never know it was supposed to be strawberry if I hadn’t read it on the package.

The chilies I love chilies in tea (mmmm mango diablo), and there is the barest hint of any spice to this tea. I used 4tsp and can barely find it!

Finally I added a little bit of chocolate flavored stevia. Now I can taste the chocolate, and more of the fruit. Now it almost passes for tea.
Almost.

The flavors in this tea are really delicious, but the tea is ridiculously weak. I think 5 or 6 tsp would be enough to make it properly….

This tea sounded great in the description; however, bothe the chocolate flavor and the spiciness were very light. I have used two 2 oz envelopes of this tea and the second envelope was much weaker. The first ingredient is apple pieces, which may help to explain why the chocolate flavor is not as strong as it should be. Most of that flavor comes from the second ingredient, carob; chocolate flavoring is far down the list. I was fairly disappointed in this tea.

So since I got a couple different things in the mail today I have to try multiple things!! This was on sale at Teavana online and since I was getting some more Zingiber Coconut (sp?) I decided to try some of this too since it was only like 3 dollars for two ounces. I have tried hot chocolate with some kind chilis in it before and really liked it, so I was hoping that the chili flavor would stand out. There was a slight chili twist, but it was mostly fruit and chocolate. I also added cream and sweetener so this was a sugary treat that I really enjoyed, and I read somewhere that if you brew this tea on the stove that the chili flavors come out more. Maybe someday I will try that, but tonight I was just to lazy.

This tea has an incredibly interesting and inviting aroma, I just could not resist. The taste is very unique, but it is difficult to pinpoint what all those flavours are. What I taste the most is the fruitiness. The only fruits in here are strawberry and apple but it is difficult to decipher which fruit it is that I’m tasting. Then there is the chocolate, which is the best part of this tea, in my opinion. It fits in really well with the fruit, compliments it perfectly. Apparently this tea is also suppose to have a chilli-heat in it. Well I don’t taste anything chilli-like. Maybe it just so happens that the spoonful of tea they used had no chilli flakes in it…maybe not.

Anyway, it’s a good tea, but I wish it could live up to its name by having some hot chilli flavour in it! I could imagine that would be amazing if it is done right!

must admit, i had my doubts when i was presented with the idea of jazzing up my ritual pu erh with with this chocolate, raspberry and chilli pepper herbal blend. however, i can hardly imagine not having it at my fingertips now!

the chocolate and chilli are complimentary and well balanced. the raspberry is a quiet note that adds an elegant but not over powering fruit taste.

this tea receives a very favourable review from me, which i don’t give easily.
