When I opened the packet, I was like Oh god, wayyy too much ginger. But after steeping, I discovered that first of all, I love tulsi (this magical Indian basil that I’ve never had before) and the sweetness counters the ginger. There’s a licorice note to it too that I adore and makes it even more candy-like. I’m glad I discovered a wonderful new caffeine-free tea option for evenings!

I liked this tea much more than I expected to. I’m not a fan of tulsi in tea, but the basil flavor is so mild as to be almost unnoticeable. The ginger isn’t too harsh or overwhelming, but has a warm, rounded flavor. The strongest note is cinnamon. Very mild on the spice-level for a chai, but an excellent tea.

I enjoyed this and I thought that I wasn’t going to like it. Ginger and tulsi are the strongest ingredients and they are incredibly fresh. The chai spices follow nicely. Awesome for a winter herbal tea. Good for three rounds, better for two. This one comes down to whether or not you like ginger. And I love ginger. And I’m happy that I can taste the cardamom in the chai. It is a bit more medicinal, but I would be very happy if this was a cold remedy.

This is spicy, earthy, slightly bitter and very herbal tasting. I’ve had tulsi in food many times, but I think this is the first time I’ve tried it steeped.

Customer service at Teabox tells me this contains actual tea, which was really unclear from the packaging and listing. I’m not sure I can taste the tea, but the ginger is pretty strong, and I’m not sure what kind of notes come out with steeped tulsi, so maybe some of the bitterness and slight astringency is the tea. The liquor is certainly dark enough to make me believe there’s tea in this, though I couldn’t pick it out visually in the dry leaf either.

Anyhoo, quite tasty, very herbal and healthy tasting.
