From Taiwan Tea Crafts

This Lot 872 is one of the very first winter high mountain teas we’ve committed to purchase in 2019. It was produced into tea by a long-time collaborator of ours at the 95k Dayuling factory, the same that produced our previous seasonal offerings in the last 4 years. His recognizable skilled signature is present in the cup. Like last year, this Lot is comprised of younger leaves resulting in a bright and vibrant tea. Dayuling as a tea terroir is intriguing and somewhat elusive but it is a name that carries such a weight. This Lot 872 is certainly a hallmark tea that showcases the distinctive character expected of Dayuling teas: It is rich in catechin which reduced the bitter and harsh elements in the liquor. The higher theanine and soluble nitrogen content contributes in heightening the compelling exotic sweetness of this tea. It is truly a unique tea coming from a uniquely rich soil and growing in the best natural conditions one can find. It’s a must for all oolong enthusiast. From the very clear and bright, golden yellow liquor will emanate an intricate flowery fragrance of fresh tangy osmanthus that is both sweet and exotic. You will also be rewarded with cup after cup of full bodied, mellow hints of exotic fruits with heady lilac notes. Very generous and very rewarding!

Finished off my sample of this tea last week. This Dayuling was nothing special given the prestige and high price tag attached to it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad tea by any means but I’ve had other high mountain oolongs and inexpensive low elevation tea that tasted better.

It’s got subtle florals with a wisp of nectar sweetness but lacks depth and fullness. Fairly thin and doesn’t go for many steeps.

The bad weather in Taiwan this past winter may be partly to blame here but in general, Dayuling seldom seems to justify the hype.
