From Taiwan Tea Crafts

This is a new Lot that replaces our very popular L-269. Some might even notice a slight change in the name of the tea: it has gone from a “Premium Grade Assam” to a “Premium Heritage Assam”. While it certainly retains its premium status for its perceptible high quality, the use of the word “heritage” refers to our deeper understanding of the assamica varietals used in Taiwan. This tea is made from pickings of the same strand that originated from India and was planted by the Japanese in the 1930s. Moreover, this particular tea is from a heritage garden which is populated by older bushes as well as seedlings and not cuttings of these older bushes giving the resulting tea great amplitude in taste and aroma. This is a very expressive assam with great aromatics, jammy sweetness and thickness in body. A wonderful alluring fruity aroma enthralls the taster and invites you to bring the cup to you lips. It immediately captures the attention of all your taste buds with a tangy attack that plateau’s nicely and is very enduring. The tannins are present but not aggressive. All this good structure serves its purpose very well, by supporting the fruitiness and sweetness of the taste and aromas. We’ve found through our multiple cuppings that it is a tea that modulates quite a bit depending on how you make it. If we recommended our previous Lots for English style black tea drinkers, this one is also the ultimate choice for a dash of milk.

Nice thick mouthfeel, with a hint of sweetness. A very nice Assam, not at all bitter.

Another win for TTC!

one from kittenna that i was curious to try as i don’t believe i’ve yet tried any of TTC’s Heritage Assam’s. This one was quite delicious but didn’t stand out from the other TTC blacks for any particular reason. The upside to TTC black’s? they have that lovely taiwanese black flavour profile, the downside? they all start to taste simliar unless you get a special harvest that really knocks it out of the park. I enjoyed this one a bunch, but don’t feel the need to order it. Thanks Kittenna!

Spring break! I LOVE having the time to break out a new tea to explore before the sun comes up, listening to the birds slowly join into the cacophony of country morning noises. This morning a second assam from Taiwan Tea Crafts is the choice. I seem to be having some struggle getting the flavors in Taiwanese assams to come to the front of my palate…I’m guessing due to my steeping parameters. I almost double-leafed this, so here goes!

There is something about Taiwanese assams that I deeply enjoy. The flavor profile is so very different from Indian assams that it is often hard to believe they come from the same cultivar. This cup is no exception. Heritage Assam Lot 334 leads with the gorgeous raisin note that is not to be ignored (nor would you want to!). It is accompanied by the taste of grain, which gives this Taiwanese assam a lovely full mouthfeel. There is a slight tanginess to this tea that is gently nudging the sides of my tongue and oddly making the smoothness of the malt flavor more noticeable. The fruitiness and sweetness of Heritage Assam Lot 334 is very apparent, but what makes this tea charming is the slight woodsy note to the grain that reminds the drinker that it comes from older trees with heritage….history. This is where the magic lay in this tea. Heritage Assam Black Tea Lot 334 is a beautifully balanced tea, full of fruity and grainy sweetness with a touch of history that is shared in the cup.
