From Sweetest Dew

One of the most consistently expensive green teas, Hou Kui is not an easy tea when it comes to getting your money’s worth.

This Hou Kui is from Hou Keng, the most famous village for Hou Kui, and is a good representation of what a Hou Kui should be. It has strong but balanced flavors. Vegetal notes are complemented by a chestnut-like note, similar to the one found in Long Jing. The crispness of these notes is what sets it apart from Long Jing. The flavors are more bold and the crispness lingers a bit after you have swallowed.

This connection between strong flavors and crisp mouth feel is what makes Hou Kui worthy of true green tea lover’s admiration.

Certainly not the worst green tea I’ve ever had (since the bad ones dominate the market…), but working through the bag was a chore. Can withstand higher temps, to a degree. Something about it feels sharp and somewhat rough on the stomach. No one buys tai ping Hou kui or any of these well known greens on the basis of value for cost, of course, but it’s especially hard to argue for this.
