From Single Origin Teas

This Pai Mu Tan grown in the African country of Malawi is a unique find. With minimal processing, the true terroir of Thyolo can be tasted. Slight oxidation of around an hour, yields a stunning leaf that is a pale green color. Faint mineral undertones give way to slightly citrus zest/apricot, and a floral aroma. A unique white peony tea that pays homage to China, and yet marches to its own tune.

Malawi produces some of the top quality teas from Africa. Influenced heavily by Scotland, it has favored the orthodox style of production than CTC. This devotion to quality allows for some unique and delicious teas.

As this is a white tea, it is best to not use boiling water. Use water with a temperature around 180 degrees, or bring to a boil and let rest for 2-3 minutes. This will give you a better brew.

Oh my, this is a lovely tea. It taste has a light cantaloupe flavor and is also creamy. I drank the first steep far too quickly because I was enjoying it so much. The second steep wasn’t quite as sweet and had more of a hay flavor. Both steeps were delicious, but I have to say the first was my favorite.

Another really nice tea from Single Origins Tea.

This is a nice tea. It’s kind of creamy, but not in a oolong kind of creamy way. It’s different. Fruity. It kind of makes me think citrus, sort of like a grapefruit, but not at the same time.

I would probably order this one, but I’m not sure I need 2oz of this.

In other news, we had a great little MINI trip to see my MINI Cooper friends. Wonderful friends, amazing food, delicious beer and wine, and just a really awesometastic fun time.

Brewed Western style. The dry leaf aroma has grassy, honeydew, and cantaloupe notes, while hay appears and is most prominent in the wet leaf aroma. The pale green-yellow liquor has a light body, and is delicate and airy, smooth, and clean, tasting of sweet grass. I am inexperienced with rarely drink white tea, so no rating for this one. Nonetheless, I still think it’s good – much sweeter than white teas I’ve tried before, has a “head in the clouds effect”. It was a pleasure to finally have a tea from Malawi, and a white tea from Africa. Thank you, Single Origin Teas!

Malawi is an amazing country. I still haven’t visited yet, but the post cards and letters I get with the tea really do paint the most beautiful scenery. I also love that there are so many different estates that are making tea in the orthodox style.

MzPriss’ Unflavored Tea Box – Tea #21

I’ve recently learned that if you leave out already steeped leaves overnight, the flavor is drastically different… I never let leaves sit longer than 24 hours. Usually I have black teas/pu-erh all day and then have one cup of white/green/herbal/oolong at night and then leave the second steep until the next night. I thought the flavor difference was just because they were steeped twice. I have to do a better job on not leaving leaves overnight then…

The leaves here are HUGE and rainbowed! Rainbow colors for tea leaves anyway! I’m not sure the difference between a Bai Mu Dan and Pai Mu Tan other than this one is from Malawi and Bai Mu Dan is not. This one is very light flavored. But usually with this type of tea, the second cup is ever better. Maybe I should be rinsing the leaves a little. Otherwise I’m getting hints of fruit, but you can’t really tell what that is yet. A little creaminess. As suspected, there is a ton of extra flavor… creamy sweet candy citrus. It kind of reminds me of the White Rhino I had from Butiki… unless its something else I’m remembering. Sigh. So many teas. Actually, I think it’s just this type of tea that I’m being reminded of… these might be my favorite white teas: creamy citrus. I’m taking a little bit more of this one from the tea box, but there is a ton left! I’ll definitely try a third steep the next go around. Also, I don’t believe cooling boiling water for 2-3 minutes leaves you with 180 degree water like the description for this one says…

From the Unflavored TTB

The box just arrived and I’m anxious to try some tea, but it’s 4 PM. Pai Mu Tan isn’t supposed to have too much caffeine, so I’ll take my chances.

The nose is really rich. My first thought was melon, but it then tasted more fruity I thought of honeysuckle, but I think pear comes closest. The taste is sweet; a bit simpler than the nose, but continues the flavors, with an additional dusty character. The finish is good, but doesn’t quite live up to the promise of the nose. There were no disagreeable elements; the flavors worked well together in a nice, smooth cup.

Overall, this is a very fine tea. To my mind, the aroma is the best part of the tea, but the taste and finish are also very good. I lingered over my first cup and while the aroma remained excellent, the taste seemed to fade a bit as the tea cooled. Still good, but no longer excellent.

Resisting the temptation to rush to another tea, and mindful of the impact of too much caffeine on the odds of my getting a decent night’s sleep, I tried a re-steep (also 3 minutes). The aroma is similar to before, but weaker. The taste and finish in the re-steep initially seemed much simpler than before: basic white tea; good, but not in the same league as the first steep. However, as the tea cooled (and I took bigger sips) it opened up into a very good tea.

Wow is it good. The dry leaves are gorgeous: large, delicate, and beautifully colored. It was difficult to measure out a teaspoon, so I had to use some guesswork. When I added water to them the pale green leaves flared into a bright avocado green. The aroma was like citrus fruit. They were “deep” notes rather than “light” notes—if that makes any kind of sense. It was distinctly citrus but it didn’t make me think bright or sparkling; it was something entirely different. Anyway…sipping, I’m first hit by the citrus flavor, then an brief mineral interlude before a smooth, sweet creaminess. It’s so good.

[I should interject here that I’ve never been a big fan of white teas. They always tasted a little too mild. They were a little too light. But that’s not the case here—this is GREAT. Is this what I’ve been missing the whole time? Maybe I’ve been drinking straight tea long enough to pick up on the nuances of white tea. Who knows.]

Second steep, the citrus aroma is still present but it seems more juicy and full. It’s definitely still in the taste but it’s a little subdued, and it’s sweet. There’s little to no discernible mineral taste. And that creamy aftertaste. Oh my gawwddd it sticks to your tongue and just stays there. It’s like clouds. (A taste will often remind me of a color, and this one makes me think white. Or maybe a very pale, soft yellow.) It’s kind of like marshmallow but it doesn’t punch you in the mouth with marshmallow, it wraps you up in a blanket soft as kittens. I love this. As it cools to lukewarm I think I’m catching hints of buttery floral notes. It becomes even sweeter.

Very much like the second steep. Juicy in a way that makes my mouth water. Still creamy and sweet. The aroma is difficult to discern. I guess it’s still citrus with a little mineral earthiness? Very light. It has lost some flavor, but not a lot. (:

Overall it was a positive tea experience! This one and Butiki’s White Rhino have made me reconsider my relationship with white teas. There’s a lot there that I guess I had been missing before. I think this would taste excellent iced. I’ve gotta try it! Thanks so much Single Origin Teas!
