From Simpson & Vail

Yunnan, known as the birthplace of tea, is a province in southwestern China that borders Vietnam, Burma, and Laos. Yunnan translates literally to “south of the clouds”. Its diverse landscape offers everything from tropical rainforests to mountainous terrain and is home to a wide variety of plant species. The Yunnan region focuses heavily on agricultural production.

Yunnan teas are particularly delightful as breakfast or early afternoon teas.

The slender, gold tipped leaves of Tippy Yunnan Black Tea yield a full-bodied cup with an earthy aroma and taste, and a slightly smoky finish.

Happy Thanksgiving, Steepster!

I am feeling quite tired this week, my neighbors seem to have gone away and their music is playing loudly every morning at 5 am, I think they forgot to turn off their alarm or something. so annoying. Someone was banging loudly on their door and rang the doorbell to complain but I really think they’re not there.

Anyway I made a nice, strong pot of this tea this morning. It’s so lovely with some soymilk. Yummm, I would definitely get this one again! Caramel and peppery! I only had a small size of it so it’s going on my Simpson & Vail Shopping list!

you too Bonnie!

Happy Thanksgiving! Started my day with a 7 mile Turkey Trail Run with a friend’s running club, now settling down to enjoy a cup of Mrs. Li’s Dragonwell. Then it’s culinary calisthenics followed by fellowship with friends!

Have a good one Mark! I don’t run but I’m about to head out for a walk. :)

From an order a while ago, so this is the 2018 harvest.  I keep trying it.  I think it’s aging well anyway.  It’s certainly a different flavor profile – not really a Yunnan as I’m accustomed to them.  The leaves are smaller with hints of gold here and there.  The dry leaf is fairly earthy, smokey and leathery and the fragrance is pretty much what you get in the flavor.  All of that, plus sweet but balanced with savory, maybe a light basil and black pepper.  Also, cascara cherries?  Though I haven’t had those very often in tea.  Definitely not like chocolate, which is Yunnan to me.   Two teaspoons isn’t really necessary — it isn’t bad but 1 1/2 teaspoons is never as deep as I want it to be.   A decent black but maybe not what I ever expect of a Yunnan. It’s four ounces for $5.90 though, and that is certainly an excellent deal (also available as an ounce).

My first attempt at brewing this tea wasn’t so memorable, but today I must have used a bit more leaf and hit the sweet spot. After brewing for three minutes and letting it mellow while covered for several more, I get to drink smooth dark chocolate with a hint of caramel. There is just enough of a bitter chocolate aftertaste to keep this interesting, but it’s all creamy smoothness up front. If my next cup from this bag is as good as this, I may have found another yummy daily drinker!
