Chicory root has been roasted, ground and mixed with coffee for more than 200 years. This combination — likely originating in Holland — was introduced to France around 1801. Sixty years later, the country was exporting more than 16 million pounds of chicory annually.
A New Orleans Ritual
By 1840, New Orleans was the second-largest importer of coffee in the United States. During wartime, this prized bean was much harder to find, so chicory root was used to stretch drinkers’ precious coffee a little further. Today, savoring a steaming cup of coffee with chicory, as well as brewed chicory in its pure form, are treasured local traditions in this iconic city.
