Bonjour tout le monde! I’m back from Paris with a few nice teas in tow :) Didn’t manage to find any THE O DORs or Dammann stockists anywhere as the hotel wifi was so bad, I couldn’t search anything (although I saw plenty of Kusumi Teas and Nature & Décourvertes with their lovely tea tin range), so I simply went to the Carrousel du Louvre MF, the one I go to most frequently.

I bought three loose-leaf teas: would have bought more but you can’t buy less than 100g on most of their teas, and any more would have gotten too costly. So this, pear-flavoured, is just an interesting addition. I’m running out of apple tea and I love pear!

The leaves smell like pear drop sweets! Really delicious, and the brew smells exactly the same way. Brewed for five minutes as recommended, the black base is as strong as expected, but some of the sweetness is retained- in a really lovely way, too. It’s sort of in the background, but working very well with the tea flavour, too, which seems to be a little smoky and just sweet enough to take the fruit notes.

Very nice- and I can’t wait to try all the others I’ve bought!

Oh, how envious! Sounds like so much fun. And this sounds lovely – looking forward for your opinions on the other MF teas you got!

And Nature & Découvertes, I had to go check and I know those tins! I had been eyeing them at a shop for cosmetics and perfumes. A couple of those smell wonderfully tempting, though I have not tried any yet!

meliorate

@cteresa N&D is a wonderful shop, isn’t it? I’m so tempted by the pistachio and almond one (never seen pistachio in a tea before) and the tins themselves are just gorgeous, not to mention the tea accessories… Let’s hope they keep that range going until next Christmas :D

cteresa

The store I see those teas at is not called ND, it´s called Terre d´OC, this is their site http://www.terredoc.com/english/

but those are the same teas indeed! the teas smelled lovely and I love the retro-ishness of the tins. I did crave the uzbekistan tea (the almond and pistachio tea you mention) or the russian tea tins, though the teas whose smell I preferred I did not like the tins. Tne pains of being a tin-lover!

Ysaurella

hummm girls, N&D teas are not bad but really their tins are better than their teas…

cteresa

I was afraid of precisely that Ysaurella! I do not think I will buy it!

meliorate

Ahhh Ysaurella, thankfully you can tell us this before we give in to the beautiful tins! XD

From my sample basket, most likely from Sil.

This most definitely has both a pear scent and taste, but I am not loving it. There’s some sort of bitter unlovable after taste and leaves my tongue with a sort of sickly feeling. Imitation flavours? I don’t know. The tea in general is bringing on both a headache and a tummy upset that I didn’t initially have. Perhaps I used too much dry leaf in making this.

Thank you, Sil, for letting me try this one. For me, it’s a big nope.

Oh no, that’s too bad to hear. Hope you were able to quickly recover from the experience!

Evol Ving Ness

Thanks, Fjellrev. Perhaps it is any multitude of things coinciding. I have enough to try the tea another time to see.

Sil

dope. Well at least you get to cross it off the list.

Yet another tea from Sil. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

With that said, I am not loving this cold brewed today. The pear, though subtle, is artificial and chemically and the base is what is strongest but also bland. I will continue to experiment but this prep method was certainly a bust.

Sil

poop

VariaTEA

No worries. Your “samples” are so generous I am sure I will find a tasty method

Sil

and if not… no worries!

From the second GCTTB; I pulled the sample of this one ‘cause I wanted to try it but didn’t end up with enough time to…

I love pear tea and I’m still searching for my perfect one: the dry smell of this was absolutely amazing and it had me drooling so hard. It was fresh, dewy, sweet, and a little floral all the while absolutely nailing what pears, especially ripe ones, smell like. It was also strikingly familiar: I’m thinking it probably reminded me of Fauchon’s pear black tea? It’s been a while since I’ve drank that, but going by memory that sounds about right.

Most of the sample went towards a cold brewed pitcher of tea: I had my first cup of it yesterday and it was so incredibly delightful. The pear flavour is really smooth, and very natural. There’s a realistic amount of sweetness, and the slightly creamy flavour of a Bosc pear alongside the more floral notes of a Bartlett pear. It’s enchanting. That said, I’m not really sure if it’s my perfect pear tea but it’s still a damn delight regardless. I look forward to trying the rest of the sample hot and seeing if that lovely, nuanced and realistic pear flavour carries through to the hot brew as well.

GCTTB5 box#2

This is a really good pear tea which is a hard flavour to get right—and taste natural. The pear isn’t as sweet as it may have been in a white or green blend, it would likely be brightened up with a touch of sugar. There is a slight floral note in the middle of the sip and a slight astringency in the aftertaste.

Overall, probably one of the best pear teas I have tasted.

look at you getting through all the fancy french teas. Hope it’s a fun journey even if you don’t love them all heh. I find there’s usually more of the base present in the french teas, making the flavours more subtle than i’m used to from north american companies

tigress_al

Yep, definitely more subtle flavouring, but I don’t mind that either!

Sil

if you find one you fall in love with, let me know. I have lots and won’t get around to drinking it all, so happy to share/swap whatever.

Always looking for a really good pear tea. Pear is a tricky flavor that is either not done well or gets lost in the base.
This smells like pear, it tastes like pear. It also tastes French – French teas to me have a distinctive essence to them. It’s a little floral, and maybe a little apple. Pretty good but there is something in the base that doesn’t quite work – maybe just a touch astringent.
Yep I like this one, but I do think that it could be better.
Thanks so much Sil for sharing….

Sil

someday we’ll find the perfect pear tea…

Makes me happy that I picked out pear without reading the description, although I could almost say that apple may be included. The black base is pretty light. This is a sweet pear. Not a natural pear but still not bad. It’s an enjoyable cup that you don’t have to pay a lot of attention to while you drink. I do wonder if it would be good cold.

Another good choice from Sil! :)

Sil

pear teas that aren’t green are rare, so i HAD to pick this one up when i was there.

I blame other people for the fact that i’m now obsessed with finding good pear teas. Sadly, it’s one of those flavours that is really hard to find, and is almost always blended with other teas. this particular tea is not only JUST pear…but it’s good. and not a green tea. haha I feel like the perfect pear tea IS likely a green tea but a black pear tea is better for me. Easier for me to drink and less hard to ruin…especially when created by a company like MF. not only does this smell like pear, but the after taste of pear lingers and makes me happy. Because it’s a black base though, it’s not as sweet as it feels like a pear tea should be…but I could certainly try adding a little sweetner in the future. overall a win!

cteresa

You don´t know if you know it, but Lupicia has a green tea with pear, pear and honey. It smelled interesting!

Sil

I’ve been trying to get my hands on that one for about a year now. every time i try to place an order with lupicia online, it’s sold out. So i’ll keep trying haha

cteresa

ah good luck! you know being sold out MIGHT be a good sign.

Sil

haha yes…but harder to get it lol

Sil

still wish that i’d realised there was a lupicia store in paris. Kicking myself over that one

cteresa

They did have it in stock! But it´s life – I was really planning to make it to Theodor but there was a problem in the metro line at the only convenient opportunity window, I was actually inside the carriage had to get out of the metro and find another plan to be able to keep to my schedule. Some other time.

I think the shop was not too big, there were some lupicia teas I had tried before that they did not carry – though difficult to compare because the tea names were translated into french (LOL I was look for Jardin Sauvage and Chaud les Marrons, wonder if they would have translated that into english!)
