After softening up the long, spindly leaves, and taming the more enzymatic aromatics, this turned into a surprisingly clean and peachy tea (the peach note pops out much more around the second steeping). The leaves are absolutely beautiful unfurled. I was given a sample of the pressed cake of this mao cha with my order from Mandala (thanks!), so I’m looking forward to comparing the two to see if there are any differences.

A sample from Garrett in my last order. I thought that i’d had this one before but i guess not? this one is a little too much like green tea for me. It’s a much more vegetal puerh. While it’s not BAD, it’s just not for me. I much prefer mandala’s wild monk :)

This was a sample that I received with one of my Mandala orders.
This is obviously a high quality tea, but it’s not to my tastes. This is too green for me. I preferred the earlier steeps to the later ones. I also preferred it at a lower temp – about 85C. The later steeps became sort of floral/vegital definitely reminded me of a green tea or a light oolong. I’m way more of a dark kind of girl.
This is really smooth, not bitter, not rough, not astringent. For those who like the lighter teas this is one to check out. Its just not my style.
Thanks Garret for the experience.

caile

Nice teaware! :)

Dexter

Thanks caile – I’ve bought a lot lately. Just starting to really understand the “good tea in good teaware theory”. :))

caile

Haha, usually I throw a spoonful into a brew basket in a random cup. ;)
It’s nice to use more fancy things sometimes though!

Dexter

LOL I still do that sometimes, but I’m really liking the gongfu in nice teaware for some of my really nice straight tea. I’ve also bought several hand thrown pottery mugs so that I have a nice cup even when I’m just drinking something quick and easy. This is my current favorite…..

caile

That is a gorgeous cup! A nice large handle on it too.
I’m drinking the tea in that pic right now – it just arrived yesterday.

mrmopar

You like that “punchy” tea as I call it. Sometimes I like it that strong as well. Some aged puerh has this at times as well as some older tea tree cakes.

Ubacat

I had a sample of that I reviewed some time ago. I loved it and it gave me good energy. I love the lighter pu-erh that is more like green tea.

I needed good sheng energy today (AKA sheng tripping)…

I planned on being a tea noodle all day and just take it easy, but this gave me such good energy, I had to go swimming for a while. (But I came back to being a tea noodle right after).

Mao cha is beautiful to look at. Silvery dark strands, super long and rigid, they beg for hot water to soften and relax.

The first steeps are so fresh, bright and mineral, with citrusy notes. Slightly astringent, but nothing offensive. I also get that very light camphor taste I have come to appreciate so much. I get the tingling tongue, which is always fun :-)

At around the 5th steep, it gets sweeter and smoother, spicy notes are also developing. It’s not woodsy or smokey at all, just pure and clean. I also get peachy notes, the type you find in white tea.

I’ve been sipping on those leaves all afternoon. This tea is fantastic, so glad I’ve included it in my order.

It gave me such a warm feeling, I feel invigorated and ready to watch the supermoon tonight with other Steepster members, from a distance…Fun!!!

SarsyPie

Another lovely review!

What, may I ask, is a tea noodle? LOL

TheTeaFairy

Tea noodle: a long and and relaxed thing that absorbs tons of tea…. (Myself on a couch, reading and steepsterising while drinking tea…lots of it)

Cameron B.

Lol, I love that term! :P

SarsyPie

OMG… that’s too cute! I had a rough night, but now I am back in the tea saddle and I’ll join you in this tea noodle status, if you don’t mind!

Cameron B.

Picturing you in the fairy jacuzzi again! With cherries floating around! Teehee.

TheTeaFairy

Hahaha! One day I might just do that cameron, bring a ton of cherries in the pool with me and let them float around me :-)

Sarsonator, tea noodles love company, you are always welcome to join me :-)
(Sorry you had a rough night though…)

SarsyPie

Thank you!

Weren’t you or MzPriss (or both) talking about the Laoshan Black Chocolate Genmaicha from Verdant? I put it on my wishlist and I think it was because one of you lovely ladies mentioned it. Or am I getting senile?

TheTeaFairy

Noooo!! Not crazy!! Look at Cameron’s review just now, lol. (Cough, I just bought 8oz.)

TheTeaFairy

(Cough, Honeybelle bought even more I think)

SarsyPie

LOL. Cameron’s review just made me think of it. I am not ready to get 8 oz, but I did order 2 oz.

It must be good if you and HoneyBelle would buy that much! I also got the Laoshan Black and the Lady Gaga blend. Why not? :)

Cameron B.

I WANT THE LADY GAGA! QQ Let me know how it is!

SarsyPie

Well here’s the thing. I already have a sample to send you, but my little zippie tea sample bags have not arrived yet. Verdant usually ships quickly, so since you’re already waiting so patiently, I’ll add a little Lady Gaga when I send you the other sample. Then you can decide if you want to buy more!

Cameron B.

Psh, that’s amazing! Can’t wait to try it, all of the ingredients sound delicious. Thanks so much! :D

SarsyPie

No problem! I like tea sharing. :)

Terri HarpLady

I’m also a LB Chocolate Genmaicha hoarder. It’s so good it makes me appear to have tourette’s syndrome when I take the first sip

TheTeaFairy

Hahaha! Totally a Tourette syndrome tea!!!

SarsyPie

Oh my! Now I am extra excited to try it!

TheTeaFairy

It tuns on the mega twitch switch on.

Marzipan

Best taken while wearing a negligee

MzPriss

Terri – I’m with you on the Sudden Onset Tourettes when drinking LBCG. And LTF – I didn’t order hardly much more than you at all – but it’s not HERE yet.

TheTeaFairy

I did offer to send you some, you should have said yesssss!!!! :-)

MzPriss

I know and I love you for that. But it will be here soon. Right?

MzPriss

OMG I just thought of a song for LBCG!!!

Terri HarpLady

Almost time for the moon to come up in St. Louis…

MzPriss

LOL – I just said that on your Elderwood note – about 30 minutes and I will be on my porch with my tea

SWApilot

Great review. This is may be in my next order.

TheTeaFairy

Thanks SWApilot, it’s really worth trying.

Garret put this sample in my last order with him. On Friday, I had little sleep and needed something that would give me energy but clear headed. I tried this one for the day. It being a few days ago, I can’t remember the exact taste experience but I do know I was impressed it wasn’t bitter or smokey. It was very close to a green tea with just that bit of earthiness. It did do a great job of getting me through the day. I didn’t even feel I was tired until the evening when I crashed early. I have one more sample of this but think I might order more after that.

Thanks Garret for this fantastic free sample!

Garret

The pleasure is all mine, my friend! I’m so happy you enjoyed it. I fell in love with this mao cha fast. The pu’er cakes I had pressed of this have all arrived and I am very excited about them. Thank you so much for taking the time to write about your experience with this tea! I am grateful!

Ubacat

I’ll have to order one of those cakes before they’re all gone!

Terri HarpLady

This is one of the ones I want to try too!
