From Maeda-en

Maeda-en’s Traditional GOLD Genmai-cha is made with late harvest sen-cha, tossed with popped rice for that malty, nutty flavor.
A great every day tea.

To brew, steep 1tbsp of leaves in 8-12 oz of hot water (180-185F) for 30-60 seconds. Hot water is key for an delicious-smelling brew!

The Maeda-en Traditional Genmai-cha is a typical looseleaf genmai-cha.
Pricing is around $4.50/150g looseleaf bag, or around $30/kg.
The ‘Golden’ label simply states a higher ratio of roasted rice to tea, making for a flavor that somewhat reminds of barley tea.
The sencha itself is of somewhat lower quality, although due to the nature of genmai-cha the flavor is not affected and the rural-tasting essence is preserved.
The flavor is very rustic and full-bodied.
It is recommended, Maeda-en has not dissappointed.

Maeda-en Gold Genmai-cha has been a staple in my cupboard for most of my adult life, and is an all time favorite. I like it in the evening, when I am just winding down, and is one of my favorites to drink when eating light Asian foods. Veggie Sushi, brown rice and veggies or a simple mushroom soup go well with this tea. In fact, pouring this over a bowl of rice and veggies makes for one satisfying meal. Real comfort food.

Genmai-Cha Brown Rice Tea is what I would call a “savory” tea. There’s a strong flavor in between toast and cooked rice with a vague hint of nuttiness. I believe it would pair nicely with any savory food or substitute for a vegetable broth.

If you’re into sweeter teas, this probably won’t be your cup of tea. For me, this may be a new staple.
