What’s so special about Shin-cha anyways?
Well, for one thing, a cup of Shin-cha is something completely different from your regular Japanese green tea. It’s very grassy, in a good way, very sweet and mellow, and minimally bitter.
There’s also a cultural reason for all this Shin-cha hype. In the Japanese culture, consuming a hatsumono (first catch/crop, in English) is thought to bring you longevity. This roots from an Edo-era superstition, that eating the first bonito (skipjack tuna) of the year would extend one’s life by 75 days.
Here at Maeda-en, we have honored this tea tradition for the last 24 years by having our Shin-cha flown in from Japan immediately after processing.
