From Lupicia

LA BELLE EPOQUE is a popular blend of Darjeeling and full-bodied black tea. Mild aroma with a hint of muscatel and a smooth taste makes this an easy to drink, refined choice for your tea time. Also try it with a bit of milk or a slice of lemon. Makes an elegant iced tea.

I got a sample of this one with my Lupicia newsletter a while back and am just now getting around to trying it. And, fan of Indian teas that I am, I’m finding it a really pleasant blend. It’s a very smooth blend—as a Darjeeling lover who can’t get enough of that hit of astringency, I might even say it’s a little too smooth and could benefit from a bit more of a kick. For that reason, I don’t think this’ll necessarily be something I’ll purchase next time I place an order with Lupicia, but I certainly wouldn’t be averse to drinking it again should another sample come my way.

Got this as a sample with my Lupicia order. I really miss living close to a Lupicia store, but getting their teas in the mail is the next best thing! It’s nice to have old favorites like Napa Blanc back in the cupboard again…

I’m surprised I haven’t tried this one yet. I get mostly darjeeling from this tea, but more tempered and smoother. It’s very floral and light, without as much of a drying or astringent quality. It’s just what I’d think of when “afternoon tea” is mentioned.

Generally I prefer straight green over black but I think it’s important to get a good tasting profile of each type. Not sure of this one. Theres alot going on in this cup. Woodsy notes, slight bark… Definitely assam. Not my favorite plain black but not bad.

I can see the Darjeeling in this but it blends in so well with the other teas that it really doesn’t take on Darj elements in the traditional muscatel/astringent way.
I must have left it longer than I realized, though I only stepped out of the room for a second! When I came back my cup was bitter. So I added some milk and it toned everything down, bringing out a lovely malt and stone fruit note alongside the refreshing Darj. I quite enjoyed the cuppa. The perfect blend of mellow vs crisp. Quite a character, I’d say!

Love how milk can save the day!

I know right?! One day I’ll likely be lactose intolerant, really not looking forward to that in terms of my teas!!

Lupicia’s description of La Belle Epoque: " A unique blend of Darjeeling and full-bodied black tea. It has a trace of nostalgic aroma."

Not quite sure what “nostalgic aroma” is supposed to mean, but I’ll take it. I wasn’t horribly into the First Flush and Second Flush Darjeeling samples I tried, but I really like La Belle Epoque. I steeped for the max recommendation of 3 minutes. It’s definitely full-bodied but it also has a nice crisp taste. Upon the first whiff, I didn’t have high hopes (I thought it smelled kind of like Tetley’s) and was expecting a bold, heavy and highly astringent tea, but was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t leave me my mouth feeling dry.
