Geek Steep S3E19 – The Three Body Problem (Novel)

Gongfu!

This is one of two different Dahongpao that I drank while reading through this week’s fandom/book – I chose Dahongpao because I read the first episode and essentially decided that something Chinese in origin with more of a political history would be super approprite for this read through, and I think I was pretty dang spot on.

I decided to bring a mooncake with me to enjoy with this session while reading at the park. This one is lemon paste with candied lemon peel and salted egg yolk. Sounds a bit weird, admittedly, but it tastes really delicious – almost like a less sweet Lemon Pound Cake!

This is honestly one of the most nutty tasting Dahongpao that I’ve brewed. It’s very smooth with a pleasantly roasty, mineral character and hints of orchids and lilacs to the undertones. It even has a bit of a snappy sort of woody top note that I found fascinating. Mostly, though, it kind of just tasted deliciously of peanuts. Both roasted peanuts and, well, peanut butter. Sorta creamy and a little bit sweet to go along with a general umami profile. More like a natural peanut butter, at least – not something super processed and refined. The kind where all the oil seperates if you go a day or two without using it. Very, very good.

Side note – I bought this yunomi cup because the colour and stroke pattern of the glaze made me think of tall blades of grass, and drinking with it this afternoon at the park just made me so gleefully joy filled because it fit in so perfectly with all the greenery!

Classic Dahongpao aroma. Yum, yum, yum. A slightly drying sensation filled in with fruit and mineral notes. A touch of tropical florals as well. The leaf is a dark chocolate color, lightly twisted, and slightly dusty looking. On the initial bit of water hitting the leaves an aroma of lychee came first and then charcoal. Now roasty/toasty notes. The first infusion leans more toward the roast notes. And no I’m not talking about chicken or beef. The flavor continues to remain dominantly on the charcoal side. Which I find somewhat surprising because of the amount of other notes in the dry aroma, however, it’s still quite enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this tea that I sampled from iteaworld. It reminds me a lot of a black tea, but it has the aftertaste of an earthy green tea. I love that the experience of this tea changes as you continue to drink it – from the first sip to the last swallow. It tastes nutty, roasted, and delicious! https://iteaworld.com/products/dahongpao-oolong-tea

Notes of cherry and dark chocolate. The roast enhances this tea without being overpowering.

This oolong had a very complex taste to it that I couldn’t quite put my finger on but I really did enjoy the way how smooth it was when I drank it . Loved the aroma these leaves made after the steeps. I found it similar to other Da Hong Pao teas but it had its own unique characteristics. https://iteaworld.com/products/dahongpao-oolong-tea?pos=2&_sid=a7a1cec16&ss=r
