Cloud and Mist – Fresh Green Tea

Cloud and Mist or Yun Wu which it is called in China, is made from the same cultivar as the famous Long Jing Tea, also originating from Zhejiang province. This fresh green tea has a distinctive shape that set it apart from most other tea. It is smooth and perfectly flattened which is the result of an elaborate three-step roasting process. The last step involves highly skilled shaping in a hot wok with bare hands.

What separates this Cloud and Mist tea from Long Jing tea, has to do with several factors. The YuYao teafarm has a higher elevation compared to the famously grown Long Jing places. The soil in the YuYao mountains is red in color and has a complex minerality not found other places in ZheJiang. Lastly Cloud and Mist has its name becaus it is picked in the early morning when there is still mist to be found on the leaves, giving a unique look to the leaves as well as a unique taste.

Type: Green
Season: Picked April 15, 2017.
Origin: YuYao, Zhejiang province, China
Cultivar: Long Jing #43

I was curios about this tea; all the Yun Wu teas that I’ve seen before have had twisty, curly leaves. This one on the other hand has flat pressed leaves like a Dragonwell. They’re smaller and a bit darker green than Dragonwell, but similar nonetheless.

The taste is very clean and somewhat mild. It has a chestnut-y note like Dragonwell, but tastes greener and more buttery. Nice minerality to it. Somewhat vegetal but also very slightly fruity.

A good green tea. I kind of want to get a sample of their Dragonwells to compare.
