Brewed with the Western method. Steeping times: 3 minutes, 6 minutes.

Leaf: Very short, curly. Mostly dark with some white-ish leaves.
Aroma: I had a cold at the time, and my nose was stuffed, but not so much this day. The wet leaf aroma evolved quite a bit – vegetal to muscatel to sugar to bread to – lastly – jams. Very rich jams.
Liquor: Amber color. Full-bodied. Smooth and thick texture. Tastes darker than 1st flush but not as much as an autumn flush. The first infusion has flavors of bread and molasses and a plum aftertaste. I couldn’t pinpoint a certain note, but after reading MJ’s it was definitely red wine. Interesting. The second was more malty and bread-like.

This darjeeling looks a bit different from the first flush I just tried. The leaves are short and thin in shades of brown and the resulting liquor is an amber color (much darker than the first flush. The first thing that hit me when sipping was sweet grape taste, which was followed by a taste that reminds me of red wine without tasting exactly like it. Sorry if that makes no sense. Overall, this tea tasted “warm” to me while the first flush tasted very fresh.

You are describing the “muscatel” notes!

mj

Is that what that is? Haha, I never knew what muscatel was before although I had heard of it. Thanks so much for this box, I’m learning a ton!!

So I’m not as sure about this one. It was okay, but not outstanding. I wonder if it’s just because it’s basically a year old? I don’t know. I’m going to go ahead and give a couple of more of the second flush a try.

I didn’t really get that muscat flavor, and I do really like muscat grapes. They’re really tasty. Ah well.

Yeah not all the darjeelings in the box were good ones.

Cheri

And I wouldn’t expect a year old second flush to be amazing, even if it were a good one.

boychik

I have year or two year olds Darj, they are fine

Cheri

I dunno. Maybe I’m also just not getting what’s there. Stacy did say these weren’t necessarily good teas, too.

Butiki Teas

Not all the teas were good. I tried to provide a variety and focused on better teas but not all were.

Cheri

It also may just be that second flush just isn’t my cup of tea (pun intended). Some of them were better than others, but I definitely preferred first flush over second over autumn.

Butiki Teas

Cheri-Tee hee. For the most part, I am the same way (except for our Sourenee Black Blossom, which is the only 2nd flush that beats out every FF for me).

Cheri

I may have to request a sample of that one on my next order from you. I am probably going to allow myself to buy tea again soon. (Well, I did allow myself to get a new subscription…but that’s different somehow. It comes out of a different pool of money in my strange self budgeting system.)
