Fennel fantasy
Why is fennel so fabulous? History has some answers. In ancient Rome, it was believed to give strength. In medieval England, it was used to calm hunger pangs during fasts. And in folk medicine, it was even touted as an aphrodisiac. Today, we love a soothing cup of fennel tea after a heavy meal, or to freshen our breath before a big meeting…or a super-hot date. Here, we mix fennel seeds with sweet cinnamon, anise and cardamom, for a deliciously comforting cuppa we’re craving 24/7. See…we told you it was fabulous.

I don’t care what the popular opinion is on this one, but I love it and am sad they are discontinuing it. I like the strong cardamom, the anise, and the fact that it is not as strong on the licorice (bleh) as The Spice is Right. I feel refreshed. It reminds me of my 5:00 AM mornings studying anatomy in the autumn before the sun comes up. I have a lot of little memories when I drink this tea. Perfectly spicy!
I’d love some recs for good cardamom-heavy teas for September and onward! Anyone? Any brand will do. Exploration time!
I LOVE licorice teas. This one is sweet and spicy and definitely has a nice licorice flavor to it. But I saw that David’s is retiring it?! Oh no! I saw Wegmans has a fennel tea as well so maybe I’ll try that next.

I LOVE fennel so I was pretty excited when this came out as a ToTM; I’m always down for trying a new fennel blend and I love when they’re caffeine free because then I can enjoy them as a late night sweet treat.
I grabbed this one hot as a “To Go” in store when I went to restock Juicy Orange and Buchu Superfruit – it was certainly quite tasty but not really surprising in any regard. Very strong, sweet licorice/anise/fennel flavour and then a more herbaceous undertone which is nice because it stops this from tasting totally one dimensional.
I wont grab more, at least right now, because the Dutch Licorice rooibos I have in my cupboard currently fills the slot in my stash for a licorice tea just fine but when I finish that tea off I don’t know whether I’ll opt to restock this one or Dutch Licorice. Both are quite lovely.
Despite not being huge on licorice teas, I did want to try this tea since it’s a new “wellness” herbal (which I’m glad DAVIDs is doing more of- at least for the time being). I picked up 8grams, and it was alright. The licorice is absolutely there, but not repulsively so, and I am getting the fennel taste too. Still though, I only do licorice teas during colds for sore throats. Will not be picking up more of this one.

Dry leaf nose: Predominantly sweet fennel with ginger, anise and cinnamon aromas.
Liqueur: Deep yellow. Strong sweet fennel and cinnamon aromas
Flavor notes: Great mix of sweet and spicy. The sweet fennel and anise come forward first, then a soft ginger heat and cinnamon linger.
