A classic first flush Darjeeling with a beautiful mix of dark green and copper-coloured leaves from the Chinese tea bush varietal. Refreshing and flowery with sweet almond notes.
The Giddapahar Tea Estate is a small, family-owned Darjeeling tea estate and is also known as ‘Eagles Cliff’. The slopes are shrouded in mist most of the time, giving the Chinese tea bushes just the conditions they need to produce wonderfully fragrant leaves. Once they have been skilfully processed according to age-old methods, the Giddapahar China Delight Darjeeling is one of the very best teas available of this grade with wonderfully sweet, mildly nutty, complex characteristics.

I think one thing that I enjoy most about Darjeeling is it has a beautiful lightness to it, and that lightness allows for so much of the complexity of a Darjeeling to shine through. This has a lovely toasty, nutty flavor – very warm and delicious. The nutty flavor of this one surprises me because it almost seems to have taken the place of the expected fruit notes of a Darjeeling. The fruit notes are also there, but, they are not as pronounced … you have to kind of search out the muscatel. Imagine, if you would, instead of a muscat grape wine, an almond wine with hints of muscat grape. That is sort of what I am experiencing here.
A lovely, deliciously intriguing Darjeeling.
I have been drinking more of this since it went on sale at Canton. What can I say? I am enjoying it even more now. The combination of a variable temperature kettle and filtered water has significantly improved my enjoyment of all my teas, but seems to have made managing this one better than before. The complex flavours are now there in every cup but it still remains light and refreshing. A real pleasure to drink.
