From Camellia Sinensis

This lot, exclusive to Camellia Sinensis, is composed of leaves from Kevin’s favourite clonal section located near the Nepalese border. From this beautiful mix of fine buds and leaves with varying shades, the amber liquor obtained is velvety and rich. Sweet floral and grassy (oat) scents are combined with the fruity (pear) and gourmet character of this magnificent balanced and expressive tea.

This was really smooth and not sharp/bitter at all. Along with the typical notes I expect (woodsy, peppery), I never felt like the flavours overpowered my taste buds.

Overall I enjoyed the tea, but Darjeelings are not something I usually purchase so I’ll reserve rating this for now. But compared to some others I’ve tried, this seemed really subtle and balanced at the same time.

I was not expecting to like this. Darjeelings are usually sharp and drying and overtly floral. It came as a sample in my order with my first gaiwan so I guess in a way I should be thanking Roswell Strange for this one. Thank you, Ros!!

This is really smooth. It’s the slightest bit peppery and maybe a bit floral. But it really doesn’t have much flavor to it. It’s not bad and an easy drinking tea because of that. I just also don’t find it particularly interesting though.

I really liked the Thurbo Darjeeling I had from this company in 2018 or thereabouts, and found it had a nice muscatel flavour. Too bad your batch wasn’t that interesting. Enjoy your new gaiwan!

I have a little bit more from the sample. Perhaps that cup would be more successful. Could also be age since this is from July 2019, though as a straight tea I feel like there shouldn’t be too much flavor deterioration

You’re right, it could be due to age. My Rohini Golden Buds from What-Cha, which was wonderful when it was harvested in 2019, is starting to lose its flavour.

I just bought a sealed bag of the Rohini golden buds. I hope they fare as well as my first go with them. In my experience, freshness is almost paramount with Indian teas.

I hope the seal helps. I also wasn’t measuring very carefully during my last session with this tea, so I may not have used enough leaf.

This 2017 harvest is actually DJ-16, which I think means that it’s a slightly earlier invoice. In the bag, it smells like dried flowers, herbs, and stonefruit. After a 3:30 steep at 195F, these flavours become more prominent. There’s not a lot of astringency, and the peach and muscatel make this tea pleasantly sweet, balancing out the herbaceousness that I think is characteristic of FF Darjeelings.

A five-minute second steep is surprisingly good, though I’ve learned from experience not to push it beyond that to “extract all the flavour!”

This was the most expensive FF black Darjeeling that Camellia Sinensis offered; which set a high standard in my book.

Luckily this tea followed through. While a little more light and delicate than I usually appreciate in my FF’s, this had a lovely floral aroma, that had a soft sweetness to it that I would describe as nectar.

Jasmine and roses and faint honey suckle, with a honey crisp apple astringency/sweetness. As it cooled it gained a bit more nutty/full bodied taste that I would describe as dried walnuts.

Is this a green Darjeeling? I am looking to taste a good one again, this sounds like a decent one to consider.

Yeah, its been pretty good. So far the best one I have tasted, but I still have 7 more to go. I liked this one because it was more floral and fragrant, and less “woodsy” “peppery”. I think I am also going to buy some of this estates second flush as I could see this having a very very good muscatel taste.
