This unconventional tea is a cyber sea dog of magic and mystery. Is it purple, is it white? A little bit of both is right. Purple in varietal, white in processing style, boil, brew, and trip a while.

Although the trees may seem young on a human timescale, the material for this tea comes from billions of years old pure stardust that has travelled forward, sideward, and possibly even backward, in time to end up becoming what we on earth know as Zijuan (purple beauty) tea plants. Grown in the Mengsong region of Yunnan, this unique varietal of purple tea is willing to take you on a voyage into the future, if you’ll let it.

Your fate and adventures may still be unwritten in the book of time, but based on our travels with this tea, an unconventional experience can be expected, filled with a crisp, tangy, fruit-like sweetness, nice huigan and even a fragrance that strongly reminds us of purple sweet potatoes. That last one might seem like a stretch, but this stood out to us. And if you haven’t tried purple sweet potatoes, then you have a secondary mission of finding some (sold separately) and baking them.

Really interesting white, not over sweet but a perfect balance of sweet and bitter.
Smells like a bai mu dan or a shoumei, but tastes more elegant with floral, grassy notes.

A very nice white tea! I got this tea from my BLT order, and it generally is quite good for the price. Decent flavour with decent dry leaf and liquor, paired with a incredibly juicy yet smooth texture and a decent finish. This tea also had a nice buzzy cha-qi and an incredible steep longevity, lasting up to steep 11. This tea however lacked in a richness and complexity when it came to flavour and aroma, and lacked in much character as well as in aftertaste. Despite its shortcomings, I still confer that this tea is worth it for the price, and is a good example of Yunnan white teas.

Decided to go with a Western style mug for my first tasting. Not sure why exactly, it just felt sort of right!? This “not quite a purple tea” and “not quite a white tea” is really interesting, and I totally get why my IG friend Justin Other was so content having this as a ‘go to’ while traveling! I felt like it had a lot of more savory and herbaceous notes of things like fresh basil and dried krishna tulsi, with an anise like sweetness!
