From Arbor Teas

Southeast Asia’s answer to rich, malty Assam tea! This organic and Fair Trade Certified Nam Lanh Estate Black Tea hails from the banks of the Red River in Vietnam’s Yen Bai province. The uniform, twisted leaves exhibit substantial tippiness, and yield a brew that is pleasantly rich, malty and coppery, with hints of molasses. Although the rainforests of south China (and their indigenous tea trees) have been all but destroyed by sprawl and industrialization, efforts are afoot to preserve the rainforests just south of the border in northern Vietnam. In order to make a compelling argument to the Vietnamese government for the preservation of these native landscapes, the tea harvesting tribes of Vietnam’s Yen Bai province are striving to produce superior-quality “ancient tree” teas that are highly sought after on the international marketplace. Although they’re still developing their green tea manufacturing technique, this very wonderful black tea is now being produced to help preserve Vietnam’s northern rainforests.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of Arbor Teas’ business philosophy. This was a little unusual. Most black teas, in my experience, tend to fall into one of four categories: malty, chocolatey, tannic and astringent, or floral. This was a mix of several.

The dry leaves smell mildly musty. The wet leaves have a rich and slightly biting floral malt scent. The tea is strong, faintly astringent, with a slightly creamy taste.

It’s hard to describe precisely. Creamy floral malt is the best way I can describe it.

The robust, spicy flavor of this tea makes it one of my top picks for fall, but since it’s lightly sweet, it also makes an excellent iced tea— one that requires no added sugar. I’ve been struggling with my love of sugar my entire life, so finding teas that are naturally sweet has been a huge priority to me. It means I can still enjoy sweet tea and not feel guilty about what all the added sugar is doing to my heath.

Another favorite. This one is smooth, dark, and malty. The maltiness of this tea reminds me of dark beer; if Darjeeling is said to be the champagne of tea, then I guess this is the stout. Other tastes include caramel and dried fruit. Similar to Arbor Teas’ Assam, but I don’t have any more of that one to compare. I like this one better, because it’s sweeter and doesn’t have the hint of spice that Assam had. It’s also similar to Yunnan, and I haven’t decided which I prefer. Finally, there is a hint of Darjeeling in this. So, this tea has a lot going on. The mouthfeel of this one is heavy and thick, giving the impression that this tea is more filling. The brewed smell is comforting and might be my favorite of any tea. I could drink this every day!
