From Adagio Teas

A classic tea combination: full, tangy Ceylon black tea flavored with jammy, aromatic currants. Smooth, deeply fruity with ripe juiciness and bright finish. Makes a warming, cozy cup in the winter and a refreshing, crisp iced tea when the summer sun is shining high.

A familiar ingredient in afternoon tea scones, the black currant is similar to a raisin in appearance yet has a distinctive tangy-sweet taste. They grow as a pendulous chain of tiny berries that ripen from the top down (do birds love ‘em.) Black currants, actually a matte brown-purple, were named for Greek dried currants made from small seedless grapes. Some people still call currants by its ancient name, ribes (Ribes rubrum). What fruit is a relative of the currant? If you guessed the gooseberry, you’re a winner!

Black Tea | High caffeine | Steep at 212° for 3 minutes.

I really thought I tried/logged this one before now…Oops!
I found this while going thru my stash – in prep for swap ammo!

I was careful not to over infuse – I didn’t want it to be bitter. Mission accomplished. I used a bit more loose leaf but only infused for about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Certainly not over 3 mins.

It has a velvety black base with a slightly-bitter-tart-juicy currant flavor.

It’s not my fave currant tea but it’s not bad.

I’ll be passing this on to a few people soon so they can try it.

Surprisingly, I really like this tea. The black tea base is bright and the currant flavor is juicy and full! It almost reminds me of jam. It’s sweet with just the right amount of tartness. I feel like I’m chomping on juicy, ripe currants :]

Had this again last night and it was way too fakey-fragrant and candyish this time, but was improved tremendously by adding lemon. I won’t reorder this one.

I’ve never had a currant, but this is very cranberry-ish to me. The previous reviewer was right; this gets bitter very quickly and easily, so I always keep a watchful eye on it.

Good solid tea. I could not drink this daily, but enjoy a cup here and there.

Currant smells like the wonderfully unique berry flavor that it is. It’s in between sweet and tart in this black tea, and isn’t cloying nor artificially flavored, nor is it rough and tangy enough to curl the tongue. It’s slightly dry after drinking. We brewed this iced first overnight, and it tastes great! This would be the tea to turn to if you’re tired of the usual big berry flavors (raspberry, strawberry, blueberry) but still want something berry-ful. I couldn’t remember what currant tastes like since it doesn’t seem to be commonly available where I live, and didn’t have much hopes for it since I picked it up on a whim. I’m really glad I did! I love it. Trying it warm will also be a treat.

I’m rating it as an 80 since it’s not an over the top outstanding tea, but it’s a humble and simple one. I’m also rating it lower than 100 since it’s not a favorite, but extremely good for what it is. :)

So, I am finally watching all the (on DVD) Star Wars movies in order. Today is ‘Revenge of the Sith’. Not sure if they have currants in a galaxy far, far, away. Haven’t much in the way of currants, except in scones. Anyway, certainly smells nice. Like a cross between dark berries and raisins. The flavour is similar, but a little on the sour side.

Alright, but there are better fruit flavours.

Nothing special. I love black currant, but this wasn’t really that.

To all of those who found this to be bitter or sour….COLD STEEP.

This was awesome. Seriously awesome. I can see how it might be a bit strong or go off as hot tea, given that the flavor is so strong for cold steeped. It is definitely a lot more flavorful than most of the other fruity ones. I actually got this leafy taste too. Perhaps though it is because I have never just eaten a currant so I have no idea how they taste really. I also don’t tend to notice many “notes” as many others seem to. Usually I can ID floral, sweet, mineral, green, etc. Nothing more specific. Here, I taste a bit of sour fruit but also leaves. But not bright green leaves, kind of like wet forest leaves. Apparently I like that.

Very hard to get right: Gets bitter and disagreeable quickly. Not too heavy handed, though, and great with milk chocolate.
