Tea of the Week for December 26, 2016!
The green tea is a fair-trade, rainforest alliance certified single garden tea from the Satemwa estate in Malawi. Specifically, it’s their Zomba steamed green tea. It has a natural light fruitiness to it that melds well with the plum notes. The ginger is warm – but it isn’t what I’d call spicy or even hot. Not even ‘zesty.’ And I know that some of you might quibble about my choice to go light on the ginger – saying that this isn’t truly “gingered” plum and you may be right on that but I didn’t want to go heavy on the ginger. I wanted to really showcase the flavor of the plum which is a little bit tart but mostly sweet and juicy tasting. I wanted the ginger to accent the plum – give it some warmth – but not obliterate the plum with the peppery bite that ginger can be known for.
This is really nice. It tastes great served hot and also really good chilled. I find that with the chill, more of the ginger comes forward while with the hot cuppa, the ginger is more subdued. I prefer this hot – but then – I usually do prefer most teas hot! Try it both hot and cold!

G is for… Gingered Plum!
I can’t remember what I’ve thought of this tea in the past, but yesterday when I had it warm, I was pretty ambivalent about it. Nothing really distinctive, just a cup of tea. Today, after sitting out overnight, I’m enjoying it much more – there’s a really delicious creaminess in the aftertaste which follows some nice candied ginger flavours. On the initial sip, I get a bit of ginger but also almost a licorice flavour, which I’m not fond of, but this aftertaste is just stellar. It’s really interesting how some flavours show up like that, although I prefer a tea that tastes good both on the initial sip and in the aftertaste. It looks like I got a large size of this tea when I purchased it, so I’m glad that I do actually enjoy it!
So I am at my sister’s and her apartment is a bit cold. That meant I wanted something to warm up a bit and gingered plum seemed like the right flavor to bring the warmth. Now normally no spice in a ginger tea is something I complain about but not here. This is all the comforting ginger flavor and even without the spice, it is delicious. The plum contributes a sweetness to both scent and taste and though it has been a while since I had a plum, this is accurate to my memory of the fruit. The ginger and juicy plum create a rounded flavor and the green base perfectly compliments them with its fullness and roasted flavor. I quite like this one and it provides a nice alternative to my usual go-to flavors.
