Another forgotten tea in my stash, recently “discovered” as I continue to sort through my stash to gain some sense of control over it. There was just enough to brew a mug of this tea, and as I’m at the bottom of the pouch, I have quite a bit of the pepper in this! It is SPICY!
The puerh is also very earthy… like the earthy I don’t like kind of earthy. I wish I had done a rinse the way I had with the first time I tried this. I steeped it for four minutes, and this is too earthy and very spicy. I think I may just make a latte with this…
Yeah, this is a little better with the steamed milk, but, it is still very spicy. I like spicy, but, when I taste the spicy over the tea and the chocolate, then that’s too spicy… although, tasting the spice over the tea at this point might be a good thing, as I think that the next time Frank is inspired to make a puerh blend he needs to do a little sampling of puerh teas to find a better one than the one he selected for this blend. It’s just too earthy … it puts the poo in the puerh, if you know what I mean.

I’m quite surprised by the steeping parameters on this… up to 10 min?! Ok, well I have tea I wanna get thru today so I think I’ll get as much as I can out of this cuppa before moving on.

Whoa… this is BLACK like this text color black. By far the darkest tea I’ve ever seen. The aroma has the earthiness of pu erh, but the smoothness of chocolate and the spicyness of the cayenne. It even has complex qualities that are coffeeish.
When I take a sip the 1st thing that hits me is the cayenne followed, surprisingly, by the pu erh base. I expected more chocolate. There is an occassional chocolate sip, but most of the time the chocolate just comes in as smoothness. It tastes kinda flat and I think could benefit from chai spices.
This ‘was’ going to be the final tea of my 52teas/mysweethoneybush/manteas week-end .. However I’ve decided to pull my pouch of ‘Kitchen Sink Green’ out of the box I’m sending to a friend tomorrow, and doing a write up on that in the morning .. I’m not really a Green Tea drinker though, aside from Jasmine Dragon Pearls, so it may not read favourably – but we’ll see ..
Anyhoo, Mayan Chocolate Puerh .. OMG I LOVE THIS TEA, and wouldn’t want to change a thing! I steep it for the recommended time yet it never gets too strong or bitter .. It brews to an impressive dark cola-black colour, with a red hue that’s most obvious if you choose to add milk .. And just a heads up – taking a good huffin sniff from the pouch isn’t advisable unless you enjoy sneezing :P
Personally I prefer it with milk, but I’m not fussed if it has sugar or not .. It’s smokey, chocolatey, spicy (as in hot, not Masala’ish) – the Cayenne will make your tongue tingle nicely, and I think I’m getting some nutty flavour from the Almonds but I’m not 100% sure on that .. It’s definitely malty and full-bodied, and it holds up to a repeat steeping without loosing any of these characteristics!
This really is an all-round delicious tea, and my absolute favourite out of all seven teas I’ve drunk this week-end .. I’m actually surprised it doesn’t have a whole list of rave reviews with requests for a re-mix of it?!
If it were still available then I know I’d have to order a lot more ..

I actually finished the whole packet in the course of a week! I really enjoyed it! I loved the cayenne-kick and the earthy, chocolately puerh. It was just a yummy combination. One caveat, though—there was a bit of a “stale” undertone to the flavor. Just a bit. Maybe I waited too long to try it. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. Cayenne works great with puerh. I want to try more spicy blends now.
Did you try rinsing it at all? Although that might remove some of the chocolate/spicy flavouring as well, I suppose.
The Pu-Erh base was a bit too strong for my tastes, but the idea is really good (but then again it should be since the blend was my idea lol). I want to try adding cayenne to Numi’s Chocolate Pu-Erh.
@Jillian: No I didn’t rinse it because I didn’t want to disturb the flavoring. I think it’s just that my packet became a little stale because I had it so long. Maybe the cayenne got stale?
@Cofftea, yeah it’s a great concept! I love spicy cocoa.
I’ve never had tea with cayenne pepper in it, so I was pretty knocked out by the sharpness of this tea. It’s a very odd taste. Or maybe it’s best called a sensation, rather than a taste. I’m sort of ambivalent about it right now. It wasn’t good, yet at the same time it wasn’t bad either. It’s such an odd, exceptional taste that I think I’m going to need another cup of this before I can consider it seriously.
