23 Tasting Notes

Finished one of my samples from the Yunomi group buy Liquid Proust organized.

I rinsed these in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes before dividing them into two tea cups (one for me, one for mom). One of them blossomed so beautifully when the hot water was poured over it! (The other one wasn’t as impressive, but still pretty!)

I brewed it for about five minutes before drinking, but I left the blossoms in the cup. The liquor was pale pink and tasted quite floral. I could still taste some of the salt and the plum vinegar, but I didn’t find it overpowering. I ended up dumping the salted rinse water without using it but…I nibbled on a bit of the blossom just to see what it tasted like and ended up just…eating it. These would be nice to eat with rice.

This isn’t something I feel the need to have in my cupboard at all times, but I liked it. I’ll have to remember to try my hand at making my own salted sakura next spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom!

This is probably the most disappointing thing in my cupboard. I’m not huge on rooibos, but I wanted to find a good decaf drink, and I love red velvet cake, so I thought this would be great.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t taste like red velvet cake at all. I steeped this according to the instructions on the package (and even overleafed a bit) but it still doesn’t taste like much of anything. I’m kind of irritated that I can’t even use it in baking because the flavour is so minimal that I might as well be using plain water anyway.

Edit: I tried again with 2tbsp/1 cup for 10 minutes and it mostly just tastes like plain rooibos and irritatingly tart hibiscus.

I still have this sample from two??? years ago that I never got around to trying until now. I was going to try measuring it out into a one cup portion, but the fruit chunks were huge and it’s already got rock sugar mixed in, so I just followed the instructions and dumped the whole package into my gravity steeper.

It’s very sweet (like, on par with their in-store samples kind of sweet), and has a kind of bubble gum-y fruit punch taste. It’s bright pink, which I think is cute, and sweet enough that the hibiscus doesn’t bother me. It’s supposed to be a white tea/herbal infusion blend, but I couldn’t taste any of the white tea at all.

I wouldn’t ever buy this myself, but I didn’t mind drinking it. My brother hates all my teas, but he liked this…probably because it’s closer in taste to something from a juice box than it is to tea.
