Grabbed a other bubble tea this week on my lunch break.

I’ve decided that I’m going to continue to explore the flavours sold by the vendor in the food court that I haven’t tried, and that I wont repeat flavours until I’ve had everything on the menu. This time around I went for kiwi, and it was pretty good. It’s another one that uses more of a fruit puree rather than having a milky base but I think that works well. I don’t know how I’d feel about a creamy kiwi bubble tea.

It was good, pretty sweet/sugary. As far as these non-milk based ones go, peach is still my favourite with my favourite milk based ones being blueberry and taro. I’d maybe reorder it again the future but it’s pretty ‘middle of the pack’ for me.

Got more of this one from M Mack’s stash sale!

I brewed up a hot mug of it earlier in the week, but to be totally honest it was disappointing. I mean, it didn’t taste bad but it certainly was a whole lot less nutty/chocolate tasting than I remember it tasting. Mostly, it tasted like an apple infusion with some almond undertones. Kind of Forever Nuts like, but without the cinnamon as robust a level of sweetness. I did add some chocolate agave to try and boost some of those peanut butter cup elements and it helped a little bit, but wasn’t a huge game changer.

Now, to be completely fair this is pretty old tea so it’s possible it’s just not brewing up the same way it would if it was fresh. It’s also possible my tastes have just largely changed. Or maybe a combination of both of those things. Who’s to say? I’ve still got more of it though, so I’ll definitely experiment and see if I can get it to taste more like what I remember it tasting like.

A nice hot cup of herbal tea to sip on partially during my closing paperwork, and partially on the commute home. It was really nice; good balance of blueberry, orange, and apple notes with natural sweetness and not much tartness at all.

After now learning more about Blue Moon Ice Cream from A Quarter To Tea I can’t help but wonder if that’s possibly where the name from this one comes from? I mean, I have NO WAY of knowing, but if people interpret Blue Moon Ice Cream as tasting sort of like Fruit Loops that I can kind of see this maybe supposed to be a recreation of that kind of flavour? I can’t think where else the name would come from, and the blueberry/orange pairing is a little more unique especially since it doesn’t seem to tie into the name at all…

Just a thought, though…

Cup from yesterday, with the tiniest bits of added vanilla agave and milk.

I’m on a huge vanilla agave kick right now, for better or worse. It’s like when I get in a “flavoured honey mood” and I just have to experiment and try adding in into everything. It worked really well with this one though! The tea itself is a nice, medium(ish) roast with a lot of sweetness in addition to the toasty quality; notes of caramel and nuts so the vanilla just really, really drew out that sweetness. It felt very much like drinking a super comforting, toasty mug of liquid vanilla hazelnut toffee with such warm roasty undertones throughout the whole thing.

It was a good evening cup too because it was VERY relaxing.

I love Hojicha! I’ve never thought of adding vanilla to it (and vanilla almond milk in tea happens to be one of my weaknesses, I admit) but I can totally see how that would work! I may have to invest in some flavored agave for those situations where my vanilla almond milk may be a bit too heavy.

Had this one as a latte at work the other day because I needed the caffeine but wasn’t feeling any of the matchas/wanted to switch things up from one of my default caffeinated teas that I drink at work.

It was really good, very soft spice notes overall and a good, almost marshmallow-y chocolate note that just worked so well with the very, very rich milk. It was weird though because I had a lot of oilyness on the surface of the latte after I had finished off all of the foam in the mug. And I mean, some oilyness is bound to occur in blend that use chocolate chips over cacao shells or nibs, but this was a very distinctly orange looking oily colour and I have NO CLUE what in the blend caused such a deep orange tinted oil to hang out on the surface of the tea liquor. But I mean, it still tasted fine and it didn’t feel overly oily either so it wasn’t a huge thing. Just different, and not something I’ve experienced with this tea in the past…

Iced, from earlier in the week.

I think I slightly underleafed because this was a little more watery than the last time I drank it but it was still very delicious! Definitely more watermelon candy than actual watermelon, with some interesting apple and bubble gum sort of undertones going on? The bubble gum sounds weird as a tasting note in this blend, but it’s certainly not the first time I’ve experienced bubble gum as a flavour when it comes to melon blends and I doubt it’ll be the last. I agree with my first impression – this one channels some serious DT Luscious Watermelon vibes as a whole.

It’s really, really good though.

Not feeling awesome today; I’m especially stuffy nosed and my throat is pretty scratchy and soar. Plus, I’m just freezing despite being covered in many layers of blankets. This was a solid choice for my first TOTD though because it’s got a bold enough flavour to cut through the ‘sick haze’ I’m experiencing, and the smooth smoke and woody elements and hot liquid in general are actually feeling very nice on my throat. It’s very, very comforting. Sadly I’m almost done the mug now, so it’ll be time for a new tea soon.

drank S’mores Chai by DAVIDsTEA

Missed my bus home from work earlier this week by a few minutes, so I managed to convince a friend to swing by and pick me up from the mall so I didn’t have to wait another hour for the next bus. I told her that I’d make her a cup of ANY tea from my stash whatever way she wanted in return; nothing off limits!

So, when we got to my house she stuck around for a little while to hang out and I made this one up for her as a latte. I also had a mug of it, but I opted to just have it hot straight. Her latte smelled pretty killer though, especially after we added a tiny amount of vanilla agave to it. Mmm! My cup was good too; strongest notes were milk chocolate, cinnamon, and apple with hints of the creamy melted down marshmallow. Still somewhat s’mores like, but reminded me a little more of a cinnamon/apple combo with complimenting chocolate notes.

Hoping this one gets a comeback in 2018.

drank Krishna Tulsi by Terroir Tea

Drank this one a little earlier in the week;

I feel like I’ve been fighting off a cold for a few days now. I’m at the point where my throat is a little sort, and my nose is stuffy but I’m not full blown ‘sick’ yet. It’s frustrating because I feel like I’m stuck in cold purgatory right now. So, I picked this one out to drink because I enjoy it normally speaking but I think it’s also just a nice sort of sick tea with a really soothing feeling on the throat.

It did feel soothing, but unfortunately I think I was in JUST ENOUGH ‘sick haze’ that I really didn’t get any of the nuances of the flavour itself. A bit of the herbaceous generic basil/tulsi notes but none of the spicier elements like clove/cinnamon I often experience with this one. So that was kind of ‘meh’.

Cold Brew!

Wow, this one was mighty intense as a cold brew! Like, I took a sip and I was fully and completely smacked with the mint which had such a great, menthol heavy finish. It was very much the same sensation as deeply inhaling air when it’s like -40C outside,
which happens quite a lot in Saskatchewan during the winter. When your whole body it outside in that kind of terrible weather it sucks but the sensation of such crisp, cooling mint when you’re in a warm environment is actually kind of wonderful.

This was a great cold brew.

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.
