So good news for any fans of this tea out there; it’s been announced now that this blend and the Lemon Cayenne Cleanse blend are officially going to be Core teas now instead of just limited edition for the Spring! I actually like both these teas, so I’m personally excited.

I made this one up when I found out the news, with a bit of chocolate agave. I don’t think the chocolate agave was a good choice though because it kind of covered up the bulk of the coconut notes and then I was left with a drink that was kind of a watery sort of chocolate taste with strong apple undertones. So, not the best cup to celebrate a tea that I’m actually very excited to hear will be sticking around and that I generally enjoy.

Still pumped though.

Yesterday was #MatchaMonday so I made sure to start my day with a bowl of it, with some added in coconut milk of course because this tea is just perfect with that addition. It channels serious Mango Sticky Rice type vibes for me when prepared that way, and just puts a whole new, unique spin on it. That underripe/pine like aspect was really strong yesterday too, but the most interesting thing for me (and kind of in a negative way) was that there was this oilyness to the whole bowl in the mouthfeel that I struggled with throughout. I think it was from the milk; though it’s not something I’m used to experiencing when I add milk to matcha so I don’t know know…

When I found this Glass Animals cover I was REALLY into it for like a solid three days; it was like my go to pairing with any tea that was even remotely tropical tasting. I think I’ve made myself incredibly sick of it though; just too much exposure too fast. If I don’t hear it again for another couple of months I’ll be totally ok with that…

Sipdown (513)!

Finished off the pitcher of this that I had made by doing some tea cocktail/lemonade type drinks. I don’t feel like rewriting all of the things for each of them so if you want to see a picture and more info on what I did to make each drink just click the photo link and read my little instagram blurb.

They were good; very much like a lightly boozey Arnold Palmer kind of thing with the added bonus of gin. I know when you add Vodka that’s called a ‘John Daly’ but fuck vodka; gin and lemon taste much better together imo. Don’t know what you’d call that though. Best twist was using the activated charcoal lemonade though – they were super cool/pretty looking!

Another one that I know I drank and I know I enjoyed while Steepster was down, but that I don’t overly remember the details of at all. Presumably it tasted like it normally does for me; decent amount of bergamot oil and lots of creamy vanilla with the potential for some more noticeable apple notes. I don’t know.

Revisited the ‘Chocolate Creme Brulee’ specialty latte currently featured in stores.

It’s still really, really damn good. Basically a lightly chocolate tinted, super creamy/velvety sponge toffee sort of flavour. I can’t decide if I like it more than a normal Jasmine Creme Brulee latte or not, but at the very least I like it as much as one. Really pumped I ended up buying some chocolate agave so that I can recreate this at home.

From a few nights ago; I brewed this one up with some vanilla agave in the hopes it’d make the creamy, buttery elements of the tea really pop. Overall the cup was smooth and fairly sweet with a very strong buttery, lemon pastry quality. It didn’t really have ‘vanilla’ notes though despite the use of vanilla agave and there was an almost powdery sort of texture to the mouthfeel that was very weird to me so it wasn’t the best mug overall. Not the worst either.

Last tea from my themed day of all White Teas; I managed to miss this review when I was doing all of the others. Unfortunately a fair bit of time has passed and I don’t overly remember what the experience was liking steeping this one up/drinking it on that day apart from the fact I know I enjoyed the cup overall and I thought it was pretty mild/delicate tasting. Note to myself to pay more attention next time/be more diligent in getting my thoughts jotted down in a more timely way.

Hmm…

Picked this one up when we were on vacation because the sample of it that I smelled in the store was really, really juicy and robustly peach scented and I thought that was something a little more unique for a Pu’erh base. When I cracked open my package of it at home though it wasn’t anywhere near the same degree of juiciness that sample had smelled like. Steeped up it’s ok; it definitely does have peach notes but the blueberry is missing and the pu’erh base itself is just a touch fishy. It was drinkable, but disappointing overall.

Trying to ration my pouch of this until the Farmer’s Market is back for the Spring/Summer and I can restock, but I did treat myself to a cup of it last week. It was bright, beautiful sweet and tart cherry and those notes were amazing. Weirdly strong cinnamon though, especially in the finish. Usually I’m all for this tea and that particular pairing but in this cup the cinnamon just felt a little out of place to me.

Currently sipping on this one while I work on these tasting notes; I feel like I’m not enjoying it as much as I generally do and I’m not sure if that’s just ‘cause it’s less than a stellar cup of if it’s for other reasons. My brother is really sick right now so I’ve been avoiding him like the plague lest I also get sick but I can feel that unpleasantly familiar tickle creeping into the back of my throat and so maybe I’m starting to get sick and this is the first stage of my palate getting all out of whack? I actually chose it because of the lemon though – just in case I am getting sick I figured lemon is usually a pretty safe option, and it IS lemony; more than anything else. In fact I once again find myself wondering where the fuck the lavender is in this blend!?

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.
