Tea swap packaging etiquette

Silly question for you all. I know many of us tea junkies will use our own nice tins to organize our teas. I’ve got in the habit of loading up my cans, then trashing the little plastic envelops that most places ship in.

Do the rest of you hang onto original packaging just for trade, or is it acceptable to ship out well-labeled baggies with your trading partners?

I have seen it both ways so it is really up to you. I am in the group that if I put that tea in the tin already, I probably already tossed the original packaging it came in. I ended up stocking up on some spare bags from the hardware store or tea pouches from amazon.

I have sent them out in little baggies (like the size of that you’d find for nuts and bolts at the hardware store) and labeled with masking tape/washi tape. I double bag if the tea is particularly strong scented and potentially even triple bag in a zip lock if it is like smoked level smelly. Then for other information about the tea, I sometimes write on a separate piece of paper if it has brewing instructions online or what was on the package.

If I am lucky and I only have a little of that tea left and it’s still in its original package, I would send the original package.

Happy swapping!

I also use little plastic baggies unless I’m sending the last of a particular tea. As long as the package is labelled, I don’t think there should be a problem.

To add on to what the others are saying (also I agree with them) just make sure too that you are double bagging teas that are extra smelly like Lapsang. Teas are hyrdoscopic and thus absorb scents and moisture around them well

Same. I feel like they preserve the tea and flavors a little better than regular zips and don’t smell like plastic.
