My teaware style is a big sturdy mug. Collectibles is just that; for the enjoyment in looking at them.
As a new member of steepster i´m glad to see how my discussion lounch on teawarestyle has grown to a happy bubbling discussion:) It is inspirational to investigate how the enthusiasm for tea has created the equipage (porcelain, silver and furniture) to enjoy this lovely act of beauty.
I recommend a book called; Tea and taste, the visual language of tea by Tania M. Buckrell Pos. This book has goog story about tea and its impact on decorative arts. For example my last weekend fleemarket purchase inspired me to find out more about the evolution of teacups. I found a lovely chinese teabowl with a saucer. The teabowl has a nice rooster theme. The before mentioned book tells that the first teacups used in Europe during the seventeenth century were in fact teabowls, small cups without handles. Now I can enjoy a cup of green tea like the Chinese originally brewed their tea…
I use a lot of glass: small teapot, double-walled cups, pitcher. It’s easy to clean and I like to look at tea as it unfurls. :) Then I have a big teapot for when my friends are over, and a gaiwan for quick steeps. Looking forward to getting some yixing and purion when I get a new job :x
I’ve a mix for what I’m doing… brown tetsubin, white gaiwan, clear glass infuser mug, glass infuser thermoses… I have to stop buying anything because I have limited space for storage.
I very specifically like collecting and using good pieces from each tea culture. I’ve some very pretty British teapots, an ironcast one, a gai, and I’d like to get a gaiwan (and a yixing for my favourite oolong, one day), and almost every day I pass by this International Foods shop, press myself up at the glass, and gaze at the samovars and stacked çaydanlıks, and tell myself that I just don’t have the room.
But when I move, by god I’m getting a samovar. And turkish teacups. I will have them.
I really don’t have too much of a preference for designs and details—just anything that catches my eye at the time. I also like collecting ware made by local potters. I’ve got a tiny teacup and some regular-sized mugs from them.
AJ. I love Samovars too. What a beautiful vessel huh? Sounds like you have a lot of cool stuff.
So beautiful, but too huge for where I live now.
Not too much—just what I can fit on a single shelf.
My style is 10 mugs, one infuser, 100 tea bags, and about a pound of loose-leaf. That’s all I need. Also, my style teawise is Twinings. Twinings, Twinings, Twinings. Mmm!
I have a mish-mosh of teacups and teapots, but I mostly don’t use the teapots unless I intend to drink more than one cup by myself. I’ve bought sets and separates, of all sorts of looks and styles. I do prefer symmetry in my teacups, and I don’t like gaudy designs. Round shapes tend to appeal more to me than straight or square. I’m always looking for uniqueness, and I have a lot of pieces that I bought from the bi-annual pottery sale put on by the ceramics students at my local university (in fact, I’m drinking out of one right now as I write this). I have a Yixing pot, a cast iron pot, a ceramic Japanese style pot, and a porcelain English style pot with five matching cups.
I’ve also bought themed mugs from places I’ve been on vacation (like my Spiderman mug from Universal Studios). Mugs seem to me to be the best souvenirs I could possibly invest in, because I do actually use them, but they’d be pretty and interesting to put on display if I ever chose to do so.
I have been a huge collector of all styles of teaware since getting into loose leaf teas.
I have a lovely glass teapot with a stainless steel infuser.
I have a 75oz porcelain teapot that I love!!!
I have several different sized ceramic & porcelain teapots I picked up from various stores in florals, solids or even prints.
As for cups, I have become more interested in teacup & saucer sets. I will buy normally two of each style or a set. My favorite at the moment is my set of Alice in Wonderland teacups & saucers. It’s also my favorite story!
And I’ve even got two teacups & saucers from my local dollar store….people tend to mistake them for Mikasa or Lenox!
Where did you get the Alice in Wonderland teacups??
@Erin, Say tea on Bloor has a huge collection of Alice stuff, it’s nearest the Jane subway stop.
There are some awesome, awesome shops in Toronto…we’ll have to have a conversation sometime ;).
Erin, if you can’t find them locally, I bought them on Amazon. I think it was like $30 USD for a set of two teacups & saucers.
Oh cool, thanks for the info!
