I like Silk Road Tea’s Source Mountain oolong better, but this is still very tasty. I don’t have much experience picking out notes in tea but even I can tell this one is complex. It leaves an aftertaste that I would describe as toasty/fruity, and actually kind of starchy; it reminded me of the taste of uncooked pasta. I couldn’t get enough. I found the roasty starchy flavor more in the second steep and more of the fruitiness in the third steep. This tea is fun to sip slowly and just enjoy. 1 tsp per 12 oz of water at 195 degrees for two minutes at first infusion and at three minutes for the subsequent ones.
My last note on this tea was short and I’m still finding it difficult to describe why I like this tea so much. It’s super smooth, leaves a very pleasant sweetness on my tongue and lasts for several infusions. Zero bitterness. In later infusions there’s some citrus notes. It’s just..good. Maybe someday I’ll be able to get into more detail but at the moment I’m just reveling in oolong goodness.
Edit: dropped the rating just a little bit. I didn’t get as many steeps as I remembered from the first time I had it. Still nummy.
What I had left of this tea was over a year old, so I decided to cold brew a big pitcher of it to use it up. That’s the main reason I don’t usually make my tea iced- it uses up a lot of tea leaves! This is a good thing however, when cleaning out the tea drawer. :-) I will update note tomorrow when I actually get to drink it!
Edit: Hooo-weee I made this a bit strong! Wow..these leaves had a whole lot of punch left!
I was surprised with this tea! My only experience with plain green tea was an extremely vegetal flavor, and this tea is very different from that. I detected a definite nuttiness in the flavor, with the vegetal notes nicely complimenting without overpowering. I wouldn’t say I’m the best at picking out aromas but when I opened the bag I instantly smelled smoke; I liked it! I like this a lot and will most probably keep it stocked. I brewed a heaping teaspoon for 12 oz of water at 175 degrees for 2 minutes.
Trying my new yixing pot that I have allotted for green to medium Oolongs. It was of course immediately floral; By the second steeping it was much more sweet, and i was experiencing this lovely buttery feeling on the roof of my mouth. Third steeping more vegetal notes came out. My sister described it as “tastes like a breath you take in a thick dark forest.”
I am loving this!!
